MGR's Political Crusade Part 2

 Sri MGR Year 104, 23rd May, Sunday

Dr.H.V.Hande was the Minister of Health and Welfare Department during our Puratchi Thalaivar MGR's rule. He had given an elaborate interview to Makkal Kural, Tamil daily. It was published in two parts. 

I have already shared the first part of the interview in our blog on the 29th January. Below is the 2nd and concluding part of MGR's political crusade in the 1970s.

And Dr.H.V.Hande also quotes the defeat of Karunanidhi in 1980 for Anna Nagar Constituency and how the result was changed in the end.

எம்ஜிஆருக்கு ஒரே குஷி

எக்கச்சக்கமாக கேன்வாசிங். தெலுங்குபிராமின்ஸ் வீதியில் மட்டும் 3500 ஓட்டு. ஓட்டுகள் எண்ணப்படுகிறது. இரவு நேரம். ரிசல்ட்டு வருகிறது.

எம்ஜிஆர் வீட்டில் நானும், திண்டுக்கல் நாடாளுமன்ற இடைத்தேர்தலில் வெற்றிபெற்ற மாயத்தேவரும் அமர்ந்து இருந்தோம்.

ஆயிரம் ஓட்டு வித்தியாசத்தில் அரங்கநாயகம் வெற்றி பெறுகிறார். இரண்டாவது இடத்தில் காங்கிரஸ் வேட்பாளர், மூன்றாவது இடத்தில் திமுக வருகிறது.

ரிசல்ட்டு கேட்டு எம்ஜிஆருக்கு ஒரே குஷி. முதுகில் தட்டி பாராட்டினார்.

1973ல் திண்டுக்கல்லில் எம்ஜிஆர் வெற்றி பெற்றவுடன், தமிழ்நாடு முழுவதும் கலைஞர் ஒரு கருத்தை பரப்பினார்.

திண்டுக்கல் நாடாளுமன்ற தொகுதி. சட்டசபைக்கு தேர்தல் நடந்தால் திமுக தான் வெற்றிபெரும் என்று ஒரு புரளியை கிளப்பினார். அந்த புரளி, கோவை மேற்கு சட்டமன்ற இடைத்தேர்தலில் பொய்யானது.

ஐசரி வேலன் மட்டுமே வெற்றி

1977ல் சட்டமன்ற பொது தேர்தல் வந்தது. எம்.ஜி.ஆர் அமோகமான வகையில் வெற்றி பெறுகிறார். ஆனால் சென்னை மாநகரத்தில் 14 சீட்டில் 13 சீட்டில் திமுக வெற்றி. தற்போது ஆர்கே நகர் என்று சொல்கிறோமே அந்த தொகுதியில், ஐசரி வேலன் அண்ணா திமுக சார்பில் பெற்றி பெற்றார்.

1978 ல் மீண்டும் எம்எல்சி தேர்தலில் நான் போட்டியிட்டேன். நான் அமோகமாக வெற்றி பெறுகிறேன். இங்கு நாம் கவனிக்க வேண்டியது, அண்ணா திமுக தோல்வி பெற்ற சென்னை மாநகரத்தில் எனக்கு வெற்றி கிடைத்திருக்கிறது. என்னை எதிர்த்து திமுகவின் மீசா கணேசன் நின்றார். டெபாசிட் இழந்தார். வெற்றி சான்றிதழுடன் நான் எம்ஜிஆரை காண சென்றேன்.

டி.நகர் கட்சி அலுவலகத்தில், என் வரவுக்காக எம்ஜிஆர் காத்திருந்தார். என்னை பார்த்தவுடன் சென்னையை மீட்டு எடுத்துட்டீங்க… என்று பாராட்டினார்.

திருவாரூருக்கு மாறிய கலைஞர்

அண்ண திமுகவில் “சென்னை மாநகராட்சி சீரமைப்பு குழு” என்று ஒன்றை உருவாக்கி, அந்த குழுவுக்கு என்னை எம்ஜிஆர் தலைவராக நியமித்தார். ஜேப்பியாரை செயலாளராக நியமித்தார்.

அங்கமுத்து, அப்துல்காதர், நிலவழகன் என ஐந்து பேர் கொண்ட உறுப்பினர்களையும் எம்ஜிஆர் நியமித்தார். 14 தொகுதிகளையும் கவனிக்கும் பணியை எங்களிடம் எம்ஜிஆர் ஒப்படைத்தார்.

நாங்கள் மூன்று மாதங்களாக தொகுதிவாரியாக சென்று 14 தொகுதிகளையும் கணித்துவிட்டோம்.

எங்கள் குழுவின் வெற்றி என்னவென்றால், சேப்பாக்கத்தில் போட்டியிட்ட கருணாநிதி, பின்னா ளில் திருவாரூரில் போட்டியிடும் நிலைமையை உருவாக்கியது தான்.

நாடாளுமன்ற தேர்தலில் சறுக்கல்

1980 ஆரம்பத்தில் நாடாளுமன்ற தேர்தல். இந்திரா காங்கிரஸ் திமுகவுடன் கூட்டணி. ஜனதாவும் அண்ணா திமுகவும் கூட்டணி. நாடு முழுவதும் ஜனதா தோல்வியுற்ற நேரம். அதே கதி தமிழகத்திலும். போனில் ரிசல்ட்டு வருகிறது. அப்போது நானும் எம்ஜிஆருடன் ரூமில் இருந்தேன்.

கோபிசெட்டிபாளையத்திலும், சிவகாசியிலும் மட்டும் தான் அண்ணா திமுக வெற்றி பெற்றது. புதுவை உள்ளிட்ட 38 தொகுதிகளில் திமுக இந்திரா காங்கிரஸ் கூட்டணி வெற்றி பெற்றது.

டெல்லி சென்ற ரகசியம்

1977ல் மொராஜிதேசாய் பிரதமராக இருந்த சமயம். காங்கிரஸ் ஆட்சி செய்த 7 மாநிலங்களின் ஆட்சியையும் டிஸ்மிஸ் செய்தார். அங்கு ஜனதா கட்சியினர் முதல்வரானார்கள். சில காரணங்களால் இந்திராகாந்திக்கு எதிரான அலை வீசிய சமயம் அது.

1980ல் பிரதமரான இந்திராகாந்தி, 7 மாநிலங்களில் ஜனதா ஆட்சியை டிஸ்மிஸ் செய்து, தேர்தலுக்கு அங்கு ஏற்பாடு செய்தார்.

இதற்கிடையில் மாறன் டெல்லி சென்றார். சஞ்சய்காந்தியை சந்தித்தார்.

மக்கள் செல்வாக்கு இழந்ததாக சொல்லி 7 மாநிலங்களில் ஆட்சியை டிஸ்மிஸ் செய்துவிட்டீர்கள். எம்ஜிஆர் படுதோல்வி அடைந்திருக்கிறார். தமிழகத்திலும் எம்ஜிஆர் ஆட்சியை டிஸ்மிஸ் செய்யுங்கள் என்றார்.

நாடாளுமன்ற தேர்தலில் அண்ணா திமுக மக்கள் செல்வாக்கை இழந்து விட்டது என்று சொல்லி, எம்ஜிஆர் ஆட்சி டிஸ்மிஸ் செய்யப்பட்டது.

ஆட்சி டிஸ்மிஸ்; ஓட்டலில் டின்னர்

இந்திராவுக்கு ஜனதா மீது தான் கோபம். அண்ணா திமுக மீது அவருக்கு பெரிதாக கோபம் இல்லை.

சட்டசபை கலைக்கப்பட்டது. ரேடியோவில் எம்ஜிஆர் ஆட்சி கலைக்கப்பட்டது என்ற செய்தி வருகிறது. எம்ஜிஆருக்கு ஆறுதல் சொல்லலாம் என்று, எம்ஜிஆரின் டி.நகர் அலுவலகத்துக்கு ஓடினேன்.

ஆட்சி கலைக்கப்பட்ட செய்தி அறிந்த உடன் எம்ஜிஆரிடம் சென்ற முதல் ஆள் நான்.

கம்பராமாயணத்தில், ராமனை ஆட்சி செய்ய அழைத்த போது ராமனின் முகம் தாமரையாக இருந்தது. ஆட்சி இல்லை என்று சொன்ன போது, ராமனின் முகம் மலர்ந்த தாமரையாக மாறியது.

அப்படித்தான் எம்ஜிஆர் சந்தோஷமாக இருந்தார். “ஹண்டே கவலைப்படாதீர்கள்” என்றார்.

“இந்திரா நமக்கு நல்ல சவ்ரியம் (சவுகரியம்) செய்து கொடுத்து இருக்கிறார். எனக்கு மக்களை சந்திப்பதற்கான வாய்ப்பை கொடுத்து இருக்கிறார்” என்றார்.

அப்போது அங்கு ஆனந்தவிகடன் மணியன் இருக்கிறார்.

சொன்னால் நீங்கள் நம்பமாட்டீர்கள்…(சிரிக்கிறார்) … நாங்கள் மூன்று பேரும் உட்லன்ஸ் ட்ரைவின் ரெஸ்டராண்டில் மசால் தோசை, டிபன் சாப்பிட்டோம் ஆனந்தமாக…

நீங்கள் எதிர்த்து நின்றால்…50:50

மாநிலம் முழுவதும் சென்று எம்ஜிஆர் மக்களை சந்தித்தார்.

“என்னுடைய ஆட்சியை ஏன் நீக்கினார்கள்? நான் என்ன தவறு செய்தேன். என் மீது என்ன குற்றச்சாட்டு சுமத்தினார்கள். இதை அவர்கள் விளக்க வேண்டும். என்னுடைய அமைச்சரவையை ஏன் நீக்கினார்கள்?” என்று தமிழகம் முழுவதும் எம்ஜிஆர் பிரச்சாரம் செய்தார்.

தமிழகத்தில் 1980 மே மாதம் சட்டமன்ற தேர்தல். 27, 31 என இரண்டு கட்டமாக நடக்கிறது. அண்ணா நகரில் கலைஞர் போட்டியிடுகிறார்.

எம்ஜிஆரிடம் இருந்து எனக்கு போன் வருகிறது.

“அண்ணா நகரில் கலைஞர் போட்டியிடுகிறார்…

நீங்கள் எதிர்த்து நின்றால் வெற்றி வாய்ப்பு எப்படி இருக்கும்?” என கேட்டார்.

“50:50” என்றேன். அதை 51 சதமாக்க முடியுமா என்றார். “நீங்கள் மனது வைத்தால் முடியும்” என்றேன். என்னை போட்டியிட ஆணையிட்டார் எம்ஜிஆர்.

கலைஞர் இல்லா சட்டசபை எனக்கெதுக்கு? எம்ஜிஆர்

இரண்டாவது கட்டத்தில் அதாவது (31.5.1980) தான் அண்ணா நகர் தொகுதிக்கு தேர்தல் நடக்கிறது. கலைஞர் நிற்பதால், முதலாவது கட்டத்தில் (21.5.1980) போட்டியிட்ட திமுகவின் மாவட்ட செயலாளர்கள், முக்கிய தலைவர்கள் அண்ணா நகரில் குவிந்தனர். எங்கு பார்த்தாலும் வெளி மாவட்டங்களிலிருந்து வந்த திமுவினர் தான்.

வாக்கு எண்ணப்படுகிறது. ஆயிரம் ஓட்டு வித்தியாசத்தில் முன்னிலையில் நான் இருக்கிறேன். பச்சையப்பன் கல்லூரியில் ஓட்டு எண்ணப்படுகிறது. திடீரென்று லைட் ஆப் செய்யப்படுகிறது. கடைசியில் 699 ஓட்டு வித்தியாசத்தில் கலைஞர் வெற்றி பெற்றார்.

எனக்கு எம்ஜிஆரிடமிருந்து போன் வருகிறது. கவலைப்பட வேண்டம் ஹண்டே. எனக்கு கலைஞர் சட்டமன்றத்துக்கு வரணும். அவருடன் சும்மா “பைட்” செய்வதற்காகத்தான் உங்களை நிறுத்தினேன்.

எதிர்க்கட்சி தலைவராக கலைஞர் இருந்தால் தான், சட்டசபை சோபிக்கும். அவர் இல்லாத சட்டசபை எனக்கு என்னதுக்கு… உங்களை நான் மந்திரியாக்குகிறேன். மகிழ்ச்சியாக இருங்கள் என்றார்.

ஜூன் 9ந் தேதி கலைவாணர் அரங்கத்தில் பதவியேற்பு விழா. நல்வாழ்வு துறை அமைச்சர் பதவிக்கு என் பெயரை அறிவித்தவுடன் பயங்கர கைத்தட்டல்.

This is the 2nd part of the series. In the below video clip Mr.Varadharajan further explains the brilliant tactics carried out by Puratchi Thalaivar MGR during his first reign from 1977 to 1980.

The above video reveals how MGR used the intelligence to overcome the hurdles created by the DMK party in the assembly and also his spy network in the opposition party.

Mr.Thangavel has forwarded to me one video from Youtube about Puratchi Thalaivar MGR's brilliance in handling the situations during his regime as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu.

It is a series that has been posted on Youtube and this part of the video is the first and intro for MGR becoming the Chief Minister. In the below video clip, Mr.Varadharajan narrates an episode from MGR's life on the first term of his rule. MGR after announcing the populistic schemes came to know that the plans were grounded by the Judicial system, how cleverly MGR trapped his adversaries are revealed in this video.

As per Mr. Varadharajan's observation that MGR is born detective and he is the number one, efficient, and diplomatic Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu.

KP Ramakrishnan - MGR Body Guard

Myself and srimgr.com team expresses our sincere condolences to Mr. K.P.Ramakrishnan's family. MGR fans have lost one great soul, one of MGR's bodyguards, stunt double, and stunt director Mr.K.P.Ramakrishnan. 

I met him twice, the first time was 31st July 2015 and 2nd time 7th September 2019. The first time I spent nearly 3 hours but the second time it was over 4.5 hours. Mr.K.P.Ramakrishnan's simplicity was one that caught my attention, he was a very humble person.

One of the cabinet ministers in Puratchi Thalaivar MGR's rule, the then Minister of Health and Welfare Department Dr.H.V.Hande has given an interview and that was published in Makkal Kural as two-part series. You can find the first part of the interview below.

அண்ணா திமுக நிறுவனரும் முன்னாள் முதல்வருமான எம்ஜிஆரின் அமைச்சரவையில் நல்வாழ்வுத்துறை அமைச்சராக பணியாற்றியவர் டாக்டர் எச்.வி.ஹண்டே.

1984ஆம் ஆண்டு எம்ஜிஆர் உடல்நிலை மோசமானபோது அவரது மருத்துவ சிகிச்சைக்கான ஏற்பாடுகளை முன்னின்று நடத்தியவர்களில் ஹண்டே முக்கியமானவர்.

1942 ஆகஸ்ட் 9 வெள்ளையனே வெளியேறு போராட்டகளத்தில் போலீசிடம் அடிவாங்கி நாட்டின் விடுதலை வேள்வியில் பங்கேற்ற பெருமைக்குரியவர் ஹண்டே. அப்போது அவருக்கு 15 வயது.

புரட்சித்தலைவர் எம்ஜிஆரின் நம்பிக்கைக்குரிய நபர்களில் ஹண்டே முதன்மையானவர்.

“மக்கள் குரல்” நாளிதழின் சிறப்பு செய்திக்காக எம்ஜிஆருடனான தனது அரசியல் பயணம் பற்றி உற்சாகத்துடன் ஹண்டே நம்மிடம் பகிர்ந்து கொண்டார்.

காலத்தை வென்றவன் - The Reborn King

A fantastic documentary by Kumkumam Sundarrajan on the most turbulent period for MGR and MGR fans, October 1984 to Feb 1985. The documentary is nicely edited with clips of Apollo Hospital, prayers rendered by people from all walks of life, interviews given by Doctors who have treated MGR, and explanations given by Dr.Hande.

After Lockdown

Seven months after Lockdown theatres opened to the public and producer of the Digitized version of our Puratchi Thalaivar starter Ayirathil Oruvan was re-released in several theatres.

Phillumeny

Phillumeny is the hobby of collecting matchboxes, matchbooks, match covers, and labels. In India we mostly use matchbox. In 1980s movies we can see matchbooks one such appears in Superman III the character Gus Gormon (Richard Pryor) after been rejected for paycheques that were given to unemployed people, to lit a cigarette he borrows a matchbook from a stranger (image given below)

Coming back to Phillumeny a person who collects such items is called Phillumenist. From Facebook Indian Phillumenists page, I got one matchbox cover showing,

Yes, the name MGR is printed in DMK party colour with the election symbol "Rising Sun". Below are the lines printed along with MGR and the election symbol, Safety matches, special quality, Selvam Match Industries, Unjampatti.

MGR's Request

 Sri MGR Year 103rd, 2nd November, Monday

When browsing through the old collection I found out this scan from 1967. A request made by the then Puratchi Nadigar MGR to the electorate before the 1967 Tamil Nadu General Elections.

Published on 17th February 1967 in Samaneedhi, a couple of lines altered the fate and the end of  Congress rule in Tamil Nadu forever. 

Grand Pencil Sketch

MGR fan brothers S.Kalai Mani and S.Thiruvalluvar have a great artistic talent. Recently S.Kalai Mani have published lot of vector drawing done using Adobe illustrator. One of his post carried a grand pencil sketch of our beloved Leader Puratchi Thalaivar MGR movies done by S.Kalai Mani's brother S.Thiruvalluvar.

The sketch shows 132 movies of MGR right from Sathi Leelavathi to Nallathai Nadu Ketkum. The colour movies are sketched in colour. Painstaking work done by S.Thiruvalluvar, I appreciate this memorable and mammoth work of the artist, fan and also a devotee of MGR.

The actual words written by S.Kalai Mani is given below from his Facebook page.

"புரட்சி தலைவரின் தீவிர ரசிகனும் ,அவரின் உண்மையான பக்தனும், என் உடன் பிறந்த அண்ணன் திரு எஸ் . திருவள்ளுவர் அவர்கள் புரட்சி தலைவரின் நூற்றண்டில் அவற்கு தன் இதய பூர்வமான அர்பணிப்பாக அவர் நடித்த 132 திரைப்படங்களில் இருந்தும் (முதல் படமான "சதிலீலாவதி" முதல் கடைசி படமான "நல்லதை நாடு கேட்க்கும்" படம் வரை ) அணைத்து படங்களையும் , pencil sketch இல் வள்ளுரான அவர் (திருவள்ளுவர்) தலைவரின் திருமுகத்தை வரைந்து சாதனை செய்து உள்ளார் , அவர் நடித்த கருப்புவெள்ளை படத்தை கருப்புவெள்ளையிலும் , வண்ணப்படத்தை வண்ணத்திலும் pencil sketch லே வரைந்து இருக்கிறார். தீவிர புரட்சி தலைவரின் தீவிர ரசிகனக இருந்த என்னை ஒரு பக்குவப்பட்ட (ஓரளவு ) ரசிகனக உருவாக்கியதும் என் அண்ணன் திரு எஸ் . திருவள்ளுவர் தான், அவரின் உடன் பிறந்த தம்பி நான் என்பதை கூறிகொள்வதில் என்றும் நான் பெருமை படுகிறேன் !"

April 1950 edition and January 1952. Maruthanattu Ilavarasi was released on 2nd April 1950 and Kumari was released on April 11th, 1952.

Two movies Andaman Kaithi and MGR's blockbuster hit Marmayogi.

Pesum carried the cover page of Nadodi Mannan in March 1958 and May 1958. Lalithangi movie information seen in the 1956 cover of Pesum Padam August 1956 issue.  The movie was not finished.

மலேசியா நாட்டில் பல அரங்குகளில் மக்கள் திலகம் எம்.ஜி.ஆர்.ஆயிரத்தில் ஒருவன் 27/08/20 முதல் தினசரி ஒரு காட்சியில் வெளியீடு .

2014ல் சென்னையில் டிஜிட்டல் வடிவில் வெளியாகி ஆல்பட் காப்ளக்சில் 190 நாட்களும் சத்யம் காம்ப்ளக்சில் 161 நாட்களும் ஓடி மகத்தான சாதனை புரிந்த மக்கள் திலகம் எம்.ஜி.ஆரின் ஆயிரத்தில் ஒருவன்  வெற்றி பயணம் தமிழகத்தில் தொடர்ந்து கொரோனா நோய் தாக்கம் தீவிரம் அடையும் வரை தொடர்ந்தது.

New Kindle E-Book மக்கள் திலகத்தின் திரைப்பட பட்டியல்

I have been writing a 200 page new Tamil book on our beloved Leader Puratchi Thalaivar MGR. I have already published 6 books through Amazon Direct Publishing. Of that two are in Tamil.

I had a doubt about the font support in Kindle and I came to know that my Tamil font no more supported in their publication. I have to rework the whole manuscript from the start. I just published a small book on the list of MGR movies with date wise titled "Makkal Thilagathin Thiraipada Patiyal" or "மக்கள் திலகத்தின் திரைப்பட பட்டியல்". I won't recommend downloading this book as there is very less information. 

Vandhiyathevan - Ponniyin Selvan Part 1

Vandhiyathevan - Ponniyin Selvan Part 1 is an animated feature Saneeshwar Animations International, the project is based on the story Ponniiyin Selvan, written by Kalki.

We have already uploaded the animation feature in January 2020 post. The above are some of the screen grabs from the video. Concentrating on the sceneries and long shots to show the grandeur of Thanjavur in the 10th century.

From their page, I came to know that the movie will be released in 2020. Eagerly waiting for the release and any subsequent videos if they post. 

Dheiva Thaai - 1964

Tomorrow (18.07.2020) is the 56th year of release of MGR's super hit movie "Dheiva Thaai". 

Below article was written by Randor Guy and published in The Hindu dated 2nd April 2016. 

One of the biggest hit of 1964, Dheiva Thaai was based on a story idea by Hindu filmmaker Nanabhai Bhatt. The film revolves around MGR, who portrays the role of a CID officer, Maran (this role was inspired by 1960s James Bond film, Dr No). His widowed mother (Pandari Bai) undergoes many problems and sacrifices her married life in order to keep a secret. Maran, meanwhile, is working hard, to hunt down a notorious criminal called Baba. It turns out that the criminal he is searching for is, in fact, his own father Karunakaran (S. A. Asokan). His father, previously an inveterate gambler, has taken on the name Baba under various circumstances and becomes a crook. Baba is also not aware that the officer searching for him is indeed his son, with whom he has lost touch for years. Maran’s mother also does not reveal the secret. It is only in the climax that Maran comes to know the real identity of Baba, and that he is his father. Nambiar portrays the role of a criminal associate of Baba. Comic relief is provided by Nagesh, who plays the role of a talentless musician, trying to teach the art to his students, and also helps the hero in getting information on wanted criminals. The film is loaded heavily with ‘mother sentiment’. Saroja Devi plays the hero’s lover. The screenplay was written by R. M. Veerappan and T. N. Balu, and the dialogue was by a newcomer, destined to create history in Indian cinema: K. Balachander. Music for this film was composed by Viswanathan-Ramamurthi, with many songs becoming hits. Popular numbers include ‘Moondrezhuthil en moochirukkum’ (T. M. Soundararajan), ‘Indha punnagai Enna vilai’ (TMS and P. Susheela), ‘Vannakkili’ (TMS and P. Susheela), ‘Oru pennai paarthu’ (TMS) and ‘Kaathalikkathey’ (P. Susheela). Lyrics were by Vaali and Aalangudi Somu.

Interestingly, Joseph Krishna, later the associate of Viswanathan-Ramamurthi in composing, worked as a choreographer-assistant in this film. MGR excelled in his portrayal as the affectionate son and sincere CID officer. Equally impressive was Pandari Bai as the sacrificing mother. S. V. Sahasranamam, noted stage and film star and also producer, plays the senior police officer who takes care of the suffering mother.

Remembered for: The melodious music of Viswanathan-Ramamurthi, impressive performances from MGR, Pandari Bai, and Saroja Devi, and Nagesh for his comedy.

Movies In The Year 2020

Due to Coronavirus pandemic, the theatres in Tamil Nadu were closed from 17th March onwards. During March 2nd week our Puratchi Thalaivar MGR starrer Ragasiya Police 115 was released in digital format in many theatres all over Tamil Nadu.
