MGR பற்றி தெரியாத மர்மங்கள் : RTD Police Varadharajan Interview About In...

Sri MGR Year 104th 25th March, Thursday

Mr.Thangavel has forwarded to me one video from Youtube about Puratchi Thalaivar MGR's brilliance in handling the situations during his regime as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu.

It is a series that has been posted on Youtube and this part of the video is the first and intro for MGR becoming the Chief Minister. In the below video clip, Mr.Varadharajan narrates an episode from MGR's life on the first term of his rule. MGR after announcing the populistic schemes came to know that the plans were grounded by the Judicial system, how cleverly MGR trapped his adversaries are revealed in this video.

As per Mr. Varadharajan's observation that MGR is born detective and he is the number one, efficient, and diplomatic Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu.

MGR On Language Issue

Sri MGR Year 101, 16th September, Sunday

“The language policy cannot be implemented by laws and threats, it needs a human approach”

After assuming office of the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, our beloved Leader Puratchi Thalaivar MGR continued two language formula. Below are some points he voiced as the ruler of the state.

41930100_755754354761157_6080353778966462464_n

  • Tamil Nadu is implementing the national policy on language but this is not being done in other states.
  • Bihar wants only one language, not the three-language formula accepted by all. Such an attitude will not help in maintaining the unity and integrity of the country.
  • The Tamil Nadu government is committed to the two-language formula - Tamil for administration in the State and English as the link language.
  • My party will be second to none in championing the cause of Tamil.
  • The Tamil Nadu government will earnestly consider compensating those who suffered during the anti-Hindi agitations.
  • The language policy cannot be implemented by laws and threats, it needs a human approach. No government can impose any language on the people.
  • Efficiency in administration should be the main criteria for the language policy.
  • The administration of our Tamil Nadu State has not suffered so far because of the absence of Hindi.
  • The language chosen should depend not on the majority of people who speak it but on the majority of administrators using it. English is known to all administrators and in my opinion it is the majority language.
  • Linking language with employment opportunities is like propagating a British idea.
  • Hindi is not used in administration.

4777

Sri MGR Year 98, 6th September, Sunday

Many MGR fans and devotees choose their cell/mobile number ending with 4777. Someone having a car will pay to get their car registered as 4777, some even wanted to get that number for their bank account.

The story behind 4777 is that our Puratchi Thalaivar MGR got elected as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu for the first time on 30th June 1977. He assumed office on 1st July 1977. Below is the first photo of MGR as the Chief Minister, snapped by Nagaraj Rao.

To the left is MGR garlanding his mentor before assuming the office of the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu on 1st July 1977, to the right MGR in the seat of the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister

So then why 4777 is a divine number for MGR devotees and fans?

Puratchi Thalaivar MGR entered the Assembly proceedings on 4th July 1977 and all the elected legislative members took oath in Tamil Nadu Assembly on that day.

Twenty years back I got a bus ticket ending with 4777 but I did not preserved it. Then whenever I get the ticket I use to check the ending number. Couple of months back when I logged on to our MGR blog I was the xxxx4778th person to view the page. Just one number less than 4777. Recently when I logged on to srimgr.com the page view counter showed xxxx4775, after some seconds I re logged on to and I was on the xxxx4777th page viewer. Below is the screen shot.

Great Chief Minister

Sri MGR Year 96, 4th January, Saturday

V.R.Lakshminarayanan, who started his Police career as Assistant Superintendent of Police, Madurai, then he was appointed as Additional Director of CBI. Later years he rendered service during our beloved Leader Puratchi Thalaivar MGR reign first as Inspector General of Police and retired as Director General of Police, Tamil Nadu. Below is the article written by V.R.Lakshminarayanan in year 1986.

From Rajakumari to Madurai Meeta Sundarapandian, MGR, the actor has travelled a long way as an actor whose very name brought millions to the box office. There has been great character actors who could play any role with ease and natural fluency, live, so to say, any role best but none of them could predict with confidence that the film would be a sure block buster. MGR’s movies on the other hand had the sure magic touch of Midas. I am not competent to comment on his skills as a movie actor except to say that I am one of his fans.

The real truth about MGR is that through the many roles he played he was not interpreting the character in the movie, but was constantly giving a glimpse of himself, his social and political philosophy, his complete identification with the ‘lowly and the lost’ his vision of a future, in short he was telling us through the celluloid medium that MGR the character in the films and MGR in flesh and blood were the same.

Added to that he had the peculiar histrionic quality of communicating this image with a transparency and adequacy not ordinarily given to other mortals. Carry Grant, Clark Gable and Gregory Peck are some of the all time greats in cinema. We admired their acting, we came back wondering at their astonishing ability to live the role but they never impressed us as projecting their own lives or their ideals. Charlie Chaplin was the nearest, but not complete. Therein lies the secret of MGR, the public figure. His popularity remains to this day a tidal wave, furious and irresistible.

V.R.Laksminarayanan

My first contact with him was nearly thirty years ago, when he led a procession to honour a Tamil writer in the blazing heat of a May afternoon, around 1 PM. I was Assistant Commissioner, Law and Order in Madras city and went to Mount Road to watch the arrangements more as an after-thought. At that hour one couldn’t collect even two souls for love or money. And as my jeep was reaching the ‘New Globe’ (now Alankar) theatre, there was a sight one had to see to believe. Traffic for two miles was completely paralysed and virtually more than a lakh of people were jostling, fighting and yelling to get a close-up  view of their idol. Mind you, it was no political demonstration. In any case DMK in 1956 was not much of a force and the gathering was almost impromptu not the pre arranged affairs of today with men and women being brought in trucks and paid for their participation, official machinery being grossly misused but the unadulterated tribute of the masses to their hero who at last incarnating in flesh and blood stood before them. To clear the crowds was out of question, though I had a company of the MSP with me for the job. I felt discretion the better part of valour, and requested MGR to get along with the procession. That was real charisma. Had Karunanidhi witnessed this scene, I am sure he would not have crossed swords with his colleague in the early seventies.

And next I met him during the Sarkaria commission days. It must be said to his credit that throughout the commissions proceedings he kept a certain distance and detachment and never attempted to personally intervene to turn the inquiry against his opponent by any means. In politics as in war, anything his fair, but MGR was a picture of fair play.

Came 1977 and the matinee idol became the Chief Minister wiping out all opposition. He did not have the cultivated sophistication of professional administrators. It is not required in a Chief Minister. But what is needed is that most uncommon quality common sense. This MGR has in plenty. More than that, he has an instinctive grasp of what the people want. This, combined with his idealism and dynamic resolve to get this done, has turned him into a great Chief Minister. I realised in those days I was very close to him that neither ministers nor senior civil servants could fool him with rules or excuses. Kamaraj was another who shared this virtue with MGR. Both have this simple rustic quality before which opposition melts in a jiffy. Some of his scheme at first appear impossible of execution. If Napoleon cut out the word, impossible from his dictionary, Kamaraj and MGR did not know the meaning of the word at all.

madurai-visit

Added to that, here is a man of great compassion. If everything else about him is forgotten, he will be remembered for his mid day meal scheme. What a great vision of children well-fed and well-educated, growing up without knowing hunger marching to take Tamil Nadu forward to a great future. People, especially the financial experts and unfeeling men scoffed at the idea and foretold certain collapse of our administration. Now other states are following Tamil Nadu.

It is not that he is without his faults. His state of health, wrecked by incessant over work as of late made him unpredictable. This is the time when he should learn to delegate. He is suspicious of those around him and for a very good reason.

Not all of them share his concern for the welfare of the Tamil people who adore him. Nor all of them have the national interest at heart. Naturally he is fearful of the consequences of putting power in their hands unchecked by his daily supervision. It was the same plight that plagued Pandit Nehru. But he should choose his ministers to do the job, not to do everything himself. If he does, the relief will give him more time and more years to see his beloved people prosper.

I can go on about this good man whom I knew reasonably well. And as the history of this country is chronicled among the many contemporary leaders, Dr.MGR will stand out as a legend.

Trees

Sri MGR Year 95, 4th March, Sunday

A poem by Joyce Kilmer (American Journalist and Poet)

I think that I shall never see
A poem lovely as a tree.
A tree whose hungry mouth is prest
Against the earth's sweet flowing breast;
A tree that looks at God all day,
And lifts her leafy arms to pray;
A tree that may in Summer wear
A nest of robins in her hair;
Upon whose bosom snow has lain;
Who intimately lives with rain.
Poems are made by fools like me,
But only God can make a tree.

Most Kings had tree planted along roads to take care of the subjects during travel and also trees are responsible for rain.

Our King of Kings MGR when he was the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu showed interest in planting saplings. In many occasions he had to plant the saplings.

Two such saplings came to news after more than two decades. The news was carried in Daily Thanthi a Tamil Newspaper.

CE_0303_box_24_Cni

One tree was planted by MGR in Secretariat Park during 1984 another one was in Chennai University on 19.1.1987. Unfortunately the name board in Secretariat is missing.

King of Kings MGR name will be remembered not only through his benevolence, cinema posters or songs but also through his deed as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu.

People’s King MGR

Sri MGR Year 94, 24th October, Monday

MGR’s grandson MGCB Pradeep has informed me an article written about our beloved Leader Puratchi Thalaivar MGR in Puthiya Thalaimurai Tamil weekly magazine.  He asked to publish this in our blog and share the news with our readers.

This week Puthiya Thalaimurai (Deepavali special) came with a cover story about our MGR it contains four pages with one page colour of MGR in sketch.

A railway gate incident about Chief Minister MGR when he visited Trichy, his car was stopped in the railway gate and nearby people rushed to meet him, they greeted him and when MGR greeted them how they are, they said if you are fine we will be fine too. (Neenga Nalla irukanum Nadu munnera song from Ithayakani movie which happened real in MGR’s life). What a word. MGR was emotionally disturbed and he told how he will repay their love and loyalty in his life.

Another incident happened in rain affected Rameswaram during his Chief Ministership how the people liked MGR even in that condition. It is not fun that MGR was known as Enga Veetu Pillai.

As a Political Leader how MGR fared well when two of his base party members quitted ADMK and joined DMK and how MGR reacted to that news is rare in Political history, that is why he is still remembered by the people and how strong his is vote bank.

When Prince of Wales Charles visited India and also came to Chennai to meet the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu MGR during early 80’s, the visit was covered by Doordarshan. One of MGR’s minister was with him and after meeting MGR, Prince Charles enquired about MGR’s birth and asked this question Is MGR born in a Royal Family?

MGR acted in the movie Mannathi Mannan, a person born royal felt that MGR is of royal birth.

A Day with Chief Minister MGR II

A day with Chief Minister MGR

Second part continues as MGR reaches Mambalam Office there he takes care of an old lady problem (That day MGR becomes their family God). Then he meets Actor Vijayakumar who came to invite MGR for the house warming party. MGR's personal secretary Lakshmi Narayanan hands out the important notes for the problem involving University Professors. When MGR assumed office in June 1977, the opposition party indirectly started various movements against MGR Government nearly 117 strikes in just 6 months, but the strike and other activities did not succeeded for what it was started, in my future post I will give you the speech made by MGR about this strikes done by various Government associations with backing of DMK.

By 10 am MGR gets ready to reach St.George Fort to do his duty as the 9th Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu. There he meets the representatives of University Professors Union and after the meeting he gives interview to press association. This page is very important how MGR looks into the matter, how well he answers and how he feels about the people of Tamil Nadu.

I have only the two parts of 3 part series of A Day with Chief Minister MGR. If any body by chance had other pages please forward to blog.

A Day with Chief Minister MGR

I have previously posted about A Day with MGR (As an actor). Today post is A day with MGR (As Chief Minister).

Magazine name is unknown, the article was three part, I got only two parts. A day with Chief Minister MGR begins in the early hours of 11th December 1977. The reporters arrived at his Ramavaram residence and came to know that Chief Minister MGR was ready to meet them and that he had got up from the bed by 4.30 am for the preparation of the report and after that he his now doing exercises.

By 8 am MGR begins his day by conversing with his party members and his fans. He questioned them that how well the Government plan is progressing in the rain affected area. (Most of the Chief Ministers will ask the Collector or the Officials of the concerned region, but not the people who is suffering, this is one method of getting the real news from the public , this happened in 11.12.1977 that is 4 month old in office as Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu - MGR was always thinking about the people, this is one reason why MGR is still number 1 Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu)

The article comes in 11 pages I have provided first 5 pages for you.

Facts from the Past

Relative popularity of political leaders in Tamil Nadu results of a statewide public opinion survey MCC .Magazine, Vol. LI, 1982, pp.47-48
Gift Siromoney and Johnson Varatharaj

Mr M. G. Ramachandran, the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu is strongly supported by thirty-nine per cent of the people of Tamil Nadu. Mrs Indira Gandhi is strongly supported by twenty-nine per cent of the people.

Mr M. Karunanidhi, the leader of the opposition and a former Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu is strongly supported by twenty per cent of the people. The relative support enjoyed by the different political leaders has not changed very much during the last year. These are some of the findings of a statewide sample survey conducted by the students of the Statistics Department of the Madras Christian College during the second week of January 1982.

A sample of about 1800 adults were carefully chosen taking special care that they represent the entire adult population of the State. One-fifth of the respondents were selected from tiny hamlets, half the number of respondents from villages and the others from small towns, large towns and cities. Student volunteers visited all the districts of Tamil Nadu to meet the respondents. The results were processed by the students with the aid of a computer. The computer results were checked by hand calculations. With reference to each political leader, each respondent was asked to state whether he or she strongly supported the leader, or just had a good opinion of him/her, or strongly opposed him/her, or had not formed any opinion at all about the leader. Each respondent could have a good opinion of more than one leader but was allowed to strongly support only one leader.

Mr M. G. Ramachandran Thirty-nine per cent of the respondents strongly support Mr.M.G. Ramachandran and in addition, twenty-six per cent have a good opinion of him. In contrast to this, thirty-one per cent are strongly opposed to him and three per cent have not expressed any opinion about him.

In the districts of Tirunelveli and Dharmapuri he has much greater support than in other districts but in Kanyakumari he has much less support. Among the poorest of the poor, viz., the agricultural landless labourers, forty-nine per cent strongly support him. He gets good support from different occupational groups. Even among the agriculturists who are landowners and tenant cultivators, thirty-seven per cent strongly support him. Among the professionals, such as teachers and doctors he is strongly supported by twenty-nine per cent. Taking the level of education into consideration, fifty per cent of the illiterates strongly support him but among the college-educated only twenty-four per cent strongly support him. Another thirty-five per cent of the college-educated, however have a good opinion of him. In other words MGR's backing is mainly from the masses, the poor and the illiterate and in addition he has supporters and well-wishers in all sections of the population.
