MGR Fan
Sri MGR Year 96, 23rd November, Saturday
Here is an email from MGR Fan 53 years old Mr.Jayan from Singapore who is also a regular reader of our MGR Blog he wanted to share his experience and his likeness to our beloved Puratchi Thalaivar MGR. He also given the images of some of his collections.
MGR Fan Jayan, Father name Krishnan.
My name is Jayan and I am born and have been living in Singapore. I was first introduced to MGR thru Adimai Penn when it was released here in 1969. Ever since, I have become a huge MGR fan. Since then, I have watched all MGR films released here. Movies that run for a month are considered a huge success because of the small Tamil film audience here. Nalla Neram, Ulagam Sutrum Valiban ran to packed houses for more than a month in 1972-73. I have also watched Annan's (I call him that) earlier films on VHS tapes and DVDs. My favourite movie is Sirithu Vaazha Vendum. The fast pace of the movie, songs, MGR's dual role impressed me. I can never forget the double MGR fight scene - Annan's entrance whistling a tune, his costume with a cloth flower-like bow at his neck, the exciting fight sequence, and the background music! I had the fortune of meeting Annan when he visited Singapore as Chief Minister. Many fans waited for him on the ground floor of the Housing Development Board office where he was having a meeting in 1978 or 79. As the lift door opened, he greeted everyone with a handshake despite his busy schedule and smiled a warm smile. His hand felt warm and he had a firm grip. I felt his hands for about 2 days and I remember I did not wash that hand for about 1 and half days! A brief but unforgettable moment.
Over the years I have also collected many of Annan's movie records (about 120). I have attached photos of my collection. My most prized possession is a rare long playing record of Ulagam Sutrum Valiban with it's beautiful cover.
His dialogues and song lyrics have taught good life values to me and all MGR fans. The line from the Pallandu Vazhgha song "Ondre Kulam Oruvanay Devan" has become my life philosophy. "Dairiyamaaga Sol Nee Manithan Thaana" from Oli Vilakku has taught me never to drink and smoke. He is truly "Kalaimagan Kalaimagal Punniyamo, Thaikulam Vazhangiya Seethanamo!" (from song 'Minminiyai Kanmaniyai' - Kannan En Kathalan movie). To all MGR fans - continue to spread the warmth and good messages of this wonderful man.

MGR Fan Auto Driver Jagadeesan
Sri MGR Year 95, 12th May, Saturday
On my way to one of my clients company I had to take an auto rickshaw. The second I seated inside the Auto, the Driver switched the mobile phone which was kept over the windshield and started to play Endrum MGR video songs.
The first song was from Vettaikaran followed by Ulagam Sutrum Valiban and Netru Indru Nalai, during that I captured the video to share this in our MGR Blog.
I asked him are you a MGR Fan he said YES Sir, and also told that he will be working from 6 pm to midnight and he will play this MGR video and MGR mp3 songs often. MGR songs gives him enormous strength and makes him to work hard. He was very eager to visit MGR temple in Nathamedu. His name is Jagadeesan.
The mobile screen is smaller even though I zoomed to capture, the screen was pixelated and you can only hear the MGR songs. The songs playing are all duet songs.
He was hesitant in sharing his photo instead he asked to put a captivating MGR photo in the Blog.

A flower-seller’s love for MGR
Sri MGR Year 94, 3rd June Friday
MGR Fan from United States Abul Hassan (a.k.a. MGR Visiree) has sent me an article that appeared in The Hindu Newspaper to share it in our Blog.
“I am now known in the cine world as the man who garlands MGR” One is a struggling flower-seller. The other is a cinematic legend and a former Chief Minister.
Every morning, for the past 10 years or so, the two have met in the middle of Anna Salai here. ‘Poo Kadai’ Sakthi (41) comes armed with just a flower garland for his “idol,” a statue of MGR near the Spencer Plaza junction. After cleaning the gleaming figure, he removes the previous day’s dried garland and places a fresh one – exchanging a few words as he goes about his task. The rush-hour traffic rolls on by either side.
Poo Kadai Sakthi Garlanding our Beloved Leader Puratchi Thalaivar MGR statue in Anna Salai.
“More than an actor”
“This is not just a statue and he was much more than an actor. He was a good human being,” says Mr. Sakthi. His gesture is simple, but he has done it every single day since he started a decade ago.
During the 2005 monsoon when he had to wade through hip-deep water from the Gemini flyover as his M80 moped refused to move, during the tragic days in 2006 when the Tsunami struck and during innumerable strikes and rallies that paralysed Anna Salai.
His morning routine includes a visit to the MGR samadhi where he lays another garland. After that, he heads back to his flower stall where he works till 10 p.m. to earn his daily wage of Rs.500. Encouraged by film personalities such as comedian Mayilsamy and ‘Idaya Kani’ S.Vijayan, who were outraged by the plight of the statue, Sakthi set out to do what he could “to restore some dignity”.
“Just another fan”
Sakthi says that he was just another MGR fan who has seen Nadodi Mannan a countless times.
Life-changing
I never knew much about him initially. But seeing all the love and adulation, the tearful visitors at his samadhi, and the frail old women who give me the little money they have just because I garland MGR...his life changed me.” “I am now known in the cine world as the man who garlands MGR,” he says. Whenever there is a function at the Nadigar Sangam or in case a flower decoration is required during a shoot, he usually gets the contract.
“Though I have never seen him in flesh and blood, I get to eat because of MGR. He offers hope and a livelihood to people even when he is not there.”

MGR Fan from South Korea
I adore MGR from my child hood and met him once in Colombo at my Uncle's house (Radio Ceylon Mylvaganam) when he visited with Actress Saroja Devi for dinner. MGR and me are both born in Kandy and all my classmates know very well about my interest in MGR.
After he became the Chief Minister, I had the opportunity to visit him as the Secretary of Ealam Tamil Association of Alberta, Canada, related to Ealam Tamil issue. During 1984, both Indira Gandhi and MGR was closely involved in Sri Lanka issues and both requested us to come up with an constitution similar to Canadian Federal system. The whole world knows, how much MGR was involved with Sri Lankan Tamil issue. If he would have been alive, he would have solved long ago.
He is a wonderful human being beyond imagination and the genuine care he had for the down trodden people was unmatchable. More and more I read about him, my respect continue to increase.
I hope you all continue with these blogs and web sites to teach the younger generation about respect, good habits, great will power to success, and the humbleness even after the great success.

Devotion of MGR Devotees II
Puratchith Thalaivar Fans - K.P.Ramesh & K.P.Suresh
I received this mail from MGR Devotee K.P.Ramesh who is regularly reading this Post. With his consent I am producing his email here. His meeting of MGR is like GODLY.
I am 39 years old & my brother is 36 years old now and we are a proud, sincere, dedicated followers of Puratchith Thalaivar MGR from our childhood as my father (retired government officer) is a staunch follower of Arignar Anna & Amarar MGR. My brother and I were fed and made to grow with Thalaivar's preachings by my father. Our past time used to be watching Thalaivar's movies since our school days. We even worked in election campaigns for our party ADMK candidates since 1980 in almost all elections. Those days, we used our bicycles decorated with Thalaivar's small cut out with 2-leaves symbol to please women voters in our native village areas.
Now I teach my two small daughters about Him; they can identify Him in any make-up or costume. They call Him as MGR Thaaththaa! Thalaivar is respected as our GURU in my family. I had seen Him several times during election campaigns/ public meetings / government functions in 1980 to 1987.
In 1986 Panchayat elections, my distant relative won as Panchayat Union Chairman. Just after the election victory, I had an opportunity to visit Ramavaram Garden along with the elected-Chairman and got a golden opportunity to touch and kiss Thalaivar's hands. I went in a queue of thousands waiting to see Him. Thalaivar greeted all of us and met the “Thondarkal” first (one-by-one) and asked the VIPs/ VVIPs to wait. I still remember those moments. I went with lots of dreams. As I was nearing Him, I was in an excited state of mind and thought of talking few words with Him. He was very much listening carefully to the party men who were talking / making complaints to Him. He was not able to speak then (just after his treatment from US). Whenever He felt something important, He was indicating His assistant to take notes of the points/ complaints. But when I reached Him, I became speechless. But I touched His right hand, lifted and kissed Him. He was smiling. My eyes were filled with water. I thought of touching His feet to get His Aashirvaatham. But as the crowd pushed me, the security men grabbed me out to exit. All just happened like a dream.
I was literally crying then; Mr.R.K.Perumal (ex-MLA of our constituency Vilathikulam in Thoothukudi district, known to my father) noticed me and took me out to a place where all our native area men were assembled inside the Garden. All were comforting me thinking that I was hurt by the crowd. I could not open my mouth and answer their questions as I was weeping out of control. After a while, I told them that I was fine and happy that I could meet our Thalaivar face to face. I was crying, as I could not tolerate the condition of Him (unable to talk and could only make a sound of "mm, mm, mm"). He spent almost one and half hours talking to the ordinary party men simply "standing" under hot sun, even in that poor health condition!
Then He felt tired and wanted to sit. So He went and sat in a chair placed at the veranda facing the crowd. The visiting party functionaries and election winners took snaps with Him. This was going on for another one hour. At this time, He spotted a poor handicapped boy crawling to reach Him with his mother, Thalaivar immediately waved with His hands not to climb on the veranda stairs (as it could be difficult for the boy to crawl & climb) and He went down to the floor to reach the boy & his mother. He listened to their issues by keeping the officers next to Him and assured them to do the needful. I cannot forget this incident.

In the past 3 years, (I visit India once a year from Dubai), I visited Ramavaram Gardens 3 times to pay my respects at His memorial. I had been to T.Nagar Memorial house once and visited few times to the Samaadhi at Marina beach.
His portrait decorates my laptop and cell phone screens. A day never passes in my life without thinking of Him! I read several books about Him and never miss a single opportunity to notice any news about Him.
Amarar MGR leads my life! Vaazhka Amarar MGR Naamam!

Emperor Returns
Monsoon rain sweeping Chennai for the past 3 days, hampering every day life of the City. For MGR fans it is celebration time. MGR pictures magnum opus production and Box Office record film of 1969 "Adimai Penn" was released in 5 theatres; 4 (Abirami, Melody, Sri Brinda, Vetri) 1 in Kanchipuram (Narayanamurthy) and another record of 4 shows in 4 theatres for second release. The theatres Abirami, Melody and Sri Brinda can accommodate nearly 900 persons per show. And Melody is screening 'Adimai Penn' for the first time.
Sri Brinda experience:
As planned earlier I went to Sri Brinda for the matinee show and my friends for the evening show in Melody. There is no end for the rain it started as a drizzle on Friday went on to Monday morning. I reached theatre half drenched, nearly 5 minutes, morning show ended and the fans with heart content came out. Some of the fans set fire to crackers - which obviously did not go well due to rain. And some fans lighted camphor near the cut out placed in the Entrance of the theatre.
While waiting I over heard some comments made by Die Hard MGR fans and one family came as far as from Veppampattu to watch this movie. I saw larger number of families came to watch
The print was very good and I contacted my friends and they said all the prints distributed for screening are also good. It was claps, praise and whistles when MGR comes on the screen and utters one liners. And cursed when the Villains laugh. Everyone enjoyed every frame of the movie.
For the story, cast and characters click the link below which I have written a year back.
http://mgrroop.blogspot.com/2006/03/story-of-adimai-pen.html
Melody experience:
The climate got still worse in the evening. Now it was raining heavier. But the movie hall and adjacent road was crowded. The function was conducted by "Kalaiventhan MGR" It all started with Band music, garlanding MGR and placing candles inside the theatre and near the screen. Film personalities like 'Kundu' Kalyanam, C.K.Sarawathi also came to watch the spectacular show.
The movie hall was filled with fans and also with all kinds of flowers. Media such as Press, TV's especially Jaya TV covered the function. The distributor of the movie Mr.Chockalingam was also present. To satisfy the fans they again screened MGR's "Thai Illalmal Nan Illai" one more time. The video of the function will follow soon.
There was heated discussion between MGR Devotees and Director, Cameraman Thankar Bachan who in his movie had remixed (killed) a MGR song and the words he used are not good and difficult to digest for MGR fans. Finally police intervened and cooled the MGR Fans.
Though it was raining heavily the crowd thronged the theatres to see their God MGR. Adimai Penn is a family entertainer as well as Box Office film. The release proved MGR is the crowd puller and he is still the Box Office Emperor.

Why Adimai Penn snap in this post? Because due to stay order and compromise later, Ayirathil Oruvan was released for one day in Sri Brinda. WatchFans frenzy!
The dialogue between MGR and M.N.Nambiyar. A class of its own, peculiar MGR one liner.
Enjoy
Pardon for the quality of the movie, taken in 3GP format changed to WMV, then edited in Ulead and uploaded in You Tube.

As usual various MGR Fan clubs started to show their respect and faith in MGR. Garlanding the Big Cut outs, pouring Milk and Giving Sweet Pongal.
