The songs from Ulagam Sutrum Vaaliban done in 4K resolution will be shown during the interval of Nadodi Mannan from 13th onwards. A double treat for MGR fans.

Ayirathil Oruvan is been released this week in Agasthya theatre by Divya Films.

Not only in Chennai in many major cities of Tamil Nadu, MGR digitized movies are released and running successfully.

Last week our beloved Leader Puratchi Thalaivar MGR movies were re-released in many parts of Tamil Nadu. This week also many of his movies are released in malls and theatres.

For the past two weeks many MGR movies were released in theatres and as well as in malls.

Emgeeyar Pictures first production Nadodi Mannan was released in 4K resolution in Albert, Bharath regular theatres and malls such as Villivakkam AGS, Velachery Jazz.

Last Sunday I came to know that the movie was nearly full in Albert for the evening show as usual MGR devotees celebrated in a grand manner.

Even a new movie nowadays find difficult for a second week run but our Puratchi Thalaivar directed mega movie Nadodi Mannan is now running successfully 2nd week in Albert.

 

I had a chance to see the video clipping posted in Facebook by a MGR fan, the print is awesome.

As cinema industry is in strike, the theatres are lookout for  movies. And many MGR movies are released in malls and cinemas.

Ninaithathai Mudipavan is running successfully in AGS cinemas, Villivakkam. The digitized version of Enga Veetu Pillai is released in Albert theatre as two shows.

Next week Emgeeyar Pictures digitized version in 4K resolution “Nadodi Mannan” will be released in Albert and Bharath.

சென்னை பல்கலைக்கழகத்தில், இதுவரை பல பெரிய தலைவர்கள் பெயரில் ஆய்வு இருக்கைகள் அமைக்கப்பட்டு செயல்பட்டு வருகிறது. இதன் மூலம் அந்த தலைவர்கள் பற்றி மாணவர்கள் ஆய்வு செய்ய வசதியாக இருக்கிறது. தற்போது எம்.ஜி.ஆர். நூற்றாண்டு விழா நடைபெற்று வருகிறது.

ஆனால், அவர் மறைந்து 30 ஆண்டுகள் ஆனபிறகும், அவர் பற்றி ஆய்வுகள் மேற்கொள்ள முடியவில்லை என சைதை துரைசாமியின் மனித நேய மையத்தின் வழியாக ‘சிவில் சர்வீஸ்’ தேர்வு எழுதும் மாணவர்கள் மூலம் அவருக்கு தெரிய வந்தது. இதற்கு காரணம் அவர் பெயரில் ஆய்வு இருக்கை இல்லை என்று மாணவர்கள் தெரிவித்தனர்.

இதைத் தொடர்ந்து, சைதை துரைசாமி உடனடியாக சென்னை பல்கலைக்கழகத்தை தொடர்பு கொண்டு எம்.ஜி.ஆர். பெயரில் ஆய்வு இருக்கை அமைக்க ரூ.25 லட்சத்தை அவர் தலைமையில் இயங்கி வரும் மனிதநேய மையத்தின் சார்பில் வழங்கினார். இதற்கான ஒப்புதல் சென்னை பல்கலைக்கழகத்தில் நேற்று நடைபெற்ற ‘சிண்டிகேட்’ கூட்டத்தில் வழங்கப்பட்டது. ‘பாரத ரத்னா புரட்சி தலைவர் எம்.ஜி.ஆர். ஆய்வு இருக்கை’ என்ற பெயரில் இந்த இருக்கை செயல்படும்.

Don’t Sleep brother don’t sleep (தூங்காதே தம்பி தூங்காதே) from the movie “Nadodi Mannan”, Young one listen to the tidings (சின்ன பயலே சின்ன பயலே செய்தி கேளடா) from “Arasilangkumari” and the most memorable line “நானே போடப்போறேன் சட்டம் பொதுவில் நன்மை புரிந்திடும் திட்டம் நாடு நலம் பெறும் திட்டம்” from “Nadodi Mannan”, (I am giving only three lines from MGR songs there are more to discuss) we all know that these brilliant, soul stirring lines are written by Pattukottai Kalyanasundaram for our Puratchi Thalaivar movies, after assuming the office of Chief Minister, MGR told the press that he did not know what the three legs in his chair belong to, but he is aware that the fourth leg belongs to the immortal lines rendered by Pattukottai Kalyanasundaram.

Pattukottai Kalyanasundaram died at very young age, MGR helped his family by giving royalty to his songs which appeared in his movie “Nadodi Mannan” and requested other movie producers to giving helping hand to Pattukottai Kalyanasundaram family. Superstitions

Sri MGR Year 98, 20th September, Sunday

Our beloved Leader Puratchi Thalaivar MGR followed the footsteps of his mentor Peraringnar Anna who had faith in ‘one caste and one God’. Likewise MGR believed in his mother. He said that his mother is his God.

MGR is not superstitious many occasions in his life established this fact. Below are some of the incidents which are major turning points in MGR’s life, that will show he was not superstitious.

Incident one: Nadodi Mannan the first directorial venture and production for MGR and for Emgeeyar Pictures was launched in Vauhini studios in Raghu kalam. His well-wishers asked him to select an auspicious time for the start of the shooting which Puratchi Thalaivar MGR retorted, my mother will sustain me for my success, I will not care for other thing. The movie turned out to the highest grosser of the year 1958.

Incident Two : For filing of nomination for the Madurai West constituency in 1980 general election, against his well wishers MGR filed in Raghu kalam. As we all know that the 1980 election is a critical part in MGR life. As his rule was dismissed on February 1980 and election was announced to be conducted on June 1980. As he believed in his mother, she guarded him and made him victorious, MGR regained his position as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu.

MGR followed what he preached in his movies. There are numerous instances from his movies which showed his preachings against superstition. I will give two instances, one the scene in Olivilakku, MGR and Sowcar Janaki conversation, when MGR gives the idol of Murugan to her for worship. And another instance  MGR asking his boss Asokan (he was poverty stricken at that time) to head the open ceremony of his new business, for which is co workers try to say that Asokan is not lucky, MGR answers to them and also to Asokan regarding unluckiness.

100 Years

Sri MGR Year 96, 17th September, Tuesday

Indian Cinema Centenary Festival will be held in Jawaharlal Nehru Indoor stadium, Chennai. The event will be inaugurated by Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa, on September 21, Saturday, 2013. President Of India, Mr.Pranab Mukherjee, will be Chief Guest of the valedictory function of 100 years of Indian Cinema, which is scheduled on 24th September.

The event will also be attended by Tamil Nadu Governor Rossaiha, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Kiran Kumar Reddy, Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Kerala Chief Minister Oommen Chandy.

As part of the celebration, movies of yesteryears will be released in selected theaters. Memorable movies of Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam and Kannada will be screened.

On 16th September, 2013, our Puratchi Thalaivar MGR movie Ayirathil Oruvan was shown to the public in Sathyam Cinemas.

 

  

 

Today Emgeeyar Pictures Nadodi Mannan is screened in Abhirami complex, Swarna Sakthi Abhirami. Followed by Rickshawakaran on 18th September in Sathyam Cinemas, Adimai Penn on 19th September in Sathyam Cinemas and again Adimai Penn on 24th September in Abhirami complex.

Emgeeyar Pictures first production Nadodi Mannan was released as Diwali attraction in Madurai Central theater this week. MGR Devotee Tirupur Ravichandran has personally paid a visit to Madurai and captured some images to share in our MGR Blog.

Nadodi Mannan 55

Sri MGR Year 95, 22nd August, Wednesday

Emgeeyar Pictures first production Nadodi Mannan has reached another mile stone. Today is the commencement of 55th year of Nadodi Mannan. A special video has been compiled for the anniversary.

 

In the below video some of the double actions scenes were included to glorify MGR, his talent in production, direction and camera technique.

 

The video shows the conversation scene of Wanderer and King in the castle, the dialogues and the visual a treat to watch. King MGR’s shadow on Wanderer MGR, King comes behind Wanderer and finally shaking hands all by one person though appears as two individuals. The magic done in those days. Hats off to their imagination and hard work..

The movie had 2 Music Directors. The first Music Director was N.S.Balakrishnan, he tuned for three songs the first song that is the title song of the movie "Senthamizhe vanakkam", MGR & Bhanumathy song "Sammadhama" and third one MGR, Bhanumathy and Chandra combination "Padupatta Thannaley". Due to unavoidable circumstances N.S.Balakrishnan resigned from the project. S.M.Subbiah Naidu took the mantle and composed the remaining songs and back ground music.

 

Cameraman Ramu was well versed in shooting in Black and White. When MGR planned to take the remaining portion in colour, Ramu requested to use some one as the cameraman. After knowing his hesitation MGR asked to go ahead, but Ramu told that he don't know the technical side, and his best friend who promised to help him did not turn over. Those days the colour films are processed in Bombay (Mumbai) only. MGR asked him to for a test shoot, and further said that he need not have to worry about the budget.if the test shoot turns successful, he asked to go ahead shooting with colour film. And MGR was not worried if the test with colour film fails so they have to start shooting again with black and white. Actress from MGR Nadaga Mandram acted for the test. After processing the film the lab gave that no adjustment is needed it is professional looking. Then Cameraman Ramu went on with outdoor shooting in Munnar . That is what we see now in the movie.

 

The role of Princess Rathna was acted earlier by one artist, which MGR  not satisfied with her performance. And also Saroja Devi was casted in the role of Queens Maid , who spies as per MGR's wish. Further more Saroja Devi acted in the song "Padupatta Thannaley". After casting her in the role of Rathna, actress Chandra was included in the cast and she was given the role of Saroja Devi that is the maid and they re-shot the song. MGR had spent more on re shooting due to technical reasons.

It is ages since Puratchi Thalaivar left film industry and it’s almost a quarter century since he left for his heavenly abode. But his films still have the same attraction and his popularity among the movie going public has not waned one bit. It’s about Nadodi Mannan which is released in some of the Chennai theatres and suburbs. The film is running to packed houses in these theatres and some of them are even having 4 shows a day. Nadodi Mannan has also stood up to the technical development of the industry in the sense that digital prints of the film are being released these days. The name MGR would never ever fade from the Tamil speaking land.

Two MGR movies were released in Chennai City alone this week. Leading Newspapers have written article about the re-release of MGR movies and the collection.

Re-Release of MGR Movies

Sri MGR Year 94, 18th March, Friday

 

This week two MGR movies were released in Chennai city. One is Emgeeyar Pictures Nadodi Mannan and another Oriental Pictures Ninaithathai Mudipavan.

 

Two movie Ads were placed in Daily Thanthi digital edition. The news was forwarded by MGR Devotee Yukesh Babu and Vinod from Bangalore.

 

 

Pallavaram Lakshmi screens MGR double action movie Ninaithathai Mudipavan.

 

53 year old partly colour and Box Office success movie Nadodi Mannan is released all over Tamil Nadu today. 23 centres were identified and the names were given in the post below.

 

Earlier Ulagam Sutrum Valiban followed by Adimai Penn were released in DTS format. I have watched Ulagam Sutrum Valiban in Qube format in Motcham theater and the article was posted in our blog.

 

This time Diamond Pictures have released Nadodi Mannan in Qube. Bharath theater in Chennai has released in Qube format. (news forwarded by MGR Devotee Sathya).

 

There were no posters for this movie release due to Election commission strict procedure.

Emgeeyar Pictures Nadodi Mannan is slated to be re-released tomorrow, an ad was placed in Daily thanthi.

 

 

Previously Diamond pictures mentioned about re-release of Ulagam Sutrum Valiban  but the movie was not released, this time they have given an ad about “Nadodi Mannan”. And there was no mention about movie halls.

Nadodi Mannan – Book Review

Sri MGR Year 94, 25th January, Tuesday

 

A book published by Najaath Publications, and written by Dewan is about the impact of Emgeeyar Pictures Nadodi Mannan movie over the people and politics of Tamil Nadu. The 56 page edition has the photo of Nadodi Mannan King MGR and Wanderer MGR in front and back MGR with the 110 sovereign Gold sword.

 

 

The book presents a tabular column of MGR movies from 1936 to 1991. Then the author dives into the subject, it mentions how and why did MGR started to film the movie, why Emgeeyar Pictures a partnership firm turned into Emgeeyar Pictures private limited and produced the Epic movie “Nadodi Mannan”. Further he writes that the movie was slated to be released in February 1958 but it was delayed due to various reasons and one to mention is the price hike of film negative. Then the release date was postponed to July but again the date was changed to August 15th.

 

The movie was delayed for the censor exhibition and the release date was extended to August 22nd. The movie was viewed in Minerva theater by the then Censor Officer G.D.Shasthri and he gave uncut to Nadodi Mannan, but MGR wanted some thing to be added. He gave some additional touches and he tried to change the title song penned by Na.Ma.Muthukuthan and voice was lent by T.M.Soundararajan for the song “Senthamizhae Vanakkam” MGR felt that the voice of Sirkazhi Govindararajan will be apt for the title song. But due to time constraint the idea was dropped. (I feel it would be very majestic remember Ulagam Sutrum Valiban title song). After some additions the same was again viewed by the censor, G.D.Shasthri though strict person approved the final cut. After that Nadodi Mannan was released on 22nd August 1958 and the rest is history.

 

The book briefly mentions the story line, the persons involved in the making and the author did not go into the Box Office records as everyone know well how the movie was successful in collection. The book mentions about the presentation ceremony in Thamukkam Grounds in Madurai and gives a detailed account of the function, how MGR reacted when he received the Gold sword.

 

The author Dewan gives 7 page commendation of MGR’s mentor Peraringnar Anna on Nadodi Mannan. The praise from Kannadasan, S.S.R., U.Krishnarao (the then Assembly Leader), V.K.Ramasamy Mudaliar (Opposition Leader), P.T.Arasan, Ma.Ki.Shanmugam (Thiyagaraya College Principal), K.R.Ramasamy, Nedunchezhian, Ma.Rasamanickanar, T.K.Bhagavathy, T.S.Durairaj, N.S.Narayanan, A.S.A.Samy,T.V.Narayanasamay and others in detailed manner.

 

The movie review given by Newspapers and Magazines of those days were recorded neatly the newspapers and magazines such as Sudesamithran, Dinamani, Tamilnadu, Navaindia, Dinamalar, The Hindu, The Indian Express, The Mail, Sport & Pastime, Sunday Times, Kalki, Ananda Vikatan, Janasakthi, Mandram, Dravidan, Thamizh Nadigan, Pesum Padam, Cinema Kathir, Kalai Arasi, Nadigan Kural, Kannagi, Tamil Nesan (Malaysia), Tamil Murazu (Singapore), Kalai Malar (Singapore) Indian Movie News (Singapore) etc.,

 

A list of MGR attended victory functions from 1.12.1958 to 10.12.1958 given in an elaborate manner. The author has done painstaking and exemplary work in bringing out this book in our hands. The cost of the book is Rs.30/- keeping in mind of MGR Fans. This innovation of movie features into book format will bring other epic movies soon.

Nadodi Mannan Golden Jubilee Year 1958 to 2008

This is my experiment with 18 lakhs. This was said by MGR in 1958 after stupendous success of the Movie Nadodi Mannan. How humble he is. The movie was a revolutionary in tamil cinema. It had showed the movie world a new way of story telling a new way of film making, a new way of editing, a new way of techniques in double action scenes so on and so forth.

I have taken some of the instances said by MGR in "Yaruku Vetri" way back in 1958, most of his writing in video format. MGR's education level is so poor but his writing skills is awesome when I read the Special edition by MGR Pictures. How well he knew and how clear his ideas are for instances the technical side, story side, dialogue side, music side, cinematography side, costume side, editing side and how he knew which actors to do which part etc. MGR is multi faceted that was proved if you watch Nadodi Mannan. We cannot put MGR into a position of mere actor alone.

When he talks about the story part he says that I am not blind sided that Nadodi Mannan does not have any minus points and I am not that stupid, but I can say that it does not have more minus points. See how humbly he uses the words. MGR further goes into how the story was developed in the year 1937-38 he was in the shooting of Maya Machindra, in Calcutta (Kolkatta) one day he went with his friends to watch a Hollywood movie "If I were King" acted by Ronald Colman, one of the scene the Hero says If I become a King ... but MGR did not follow what the dialogues his mind was revolving around the words If I become a King. That is the day when Nadodi Mannan was seeded in his mind, it developed slowly when the time was ripe, MGR went on to produce the movie. Why did he produce then? Because he said it is an experiment so I did not want other producers to loose money if the film fails.

The Seed for Nadodi Mannan

First the movie was named Uthamaputhiran with MGR and Nadigar Thilagam with same movie title. MGR then re christened the name into Nadodi Mannan with a hint on it is remake of Prisoner of Zenda at first. In the shooting of Alibaba actress Bhanumathy questioned MGR that she was also producing the same movie with the same story. She asked MGR to discontinue the movie, but MGR said politely that this story only had the King's character from the movie but the others are different. And that he has nurtured the story for years and he has the idea to direct also. She was hesitant at first, then after some days, Bhanumathy told that she has stopped the movie that you can now take the movie as you wish, MGR thanked her whole heartedly. (Can any one in the calibre of MGR can tell the truth like this).

Here is the Intro for most important characters of the movie, starting with M.N.Nambiyar who is also has the right to become King, if you watched whole movie you will understand that MGR has given costly costumes to Nambiyar in this movie, and also that Nambiyar is good looking. Watch for the line of Nambiyar in this clip. Followed by most memorable song "Thoongathey thambi thoongathey" written by Pattukottai Kalyana Sundaram. Followed by the clip showing the camera angle the creativity of MGR and Ramu (Camera Man) imagining the point of view of Bhanumathy through the ventilator shaft. A great achievement of those days for camera angle.

The intro of King MGR in a Chariot, look closely the intricate details of the chariot, it looks very royal. How much did MGR has spent for this chariot alone.

Double Action Scenes:

This is a video clip for the for the technical brilliance of MGR for the movie "Nadodi Mannan" the first conversation scene of King and the Wanderer and other scenes. Those days double action scenes are done by mask shot, that is covering half side of the film and shooting with one character and re shooting the other half of the film with other character. The character and as well the Director and Camera man should know the scene very well and they should have a good memory, the lighting plays a major role also. See editing technique of three individual shots in 2 seconds first shot King MGR walking from the left, next medium long shot showing King MGR, Wanderer MGR and the two ministers third shot both of them all these in 2 seconds. The editor was first Arumugam, he resigned from the project then came Perumal he was upto the editor for Black and white portion, he was unable to work for the remaining portions, and the assistant editors also withdrew from the project the colour portion was completed by Jambu, and he asked MGR not to mention his name in the title card. (This was said by the Director, Producer MGR)

When King and Wanderer starts the conversation about the kingdom and the condition of the poor people the dialogues shifts from the ability of the king and commons, both MGR will be sitting in arms distance, left side was King, right was Wanderer, camera was on the side of Wanderer now then the camera pans to the left for the conversation part of King. The movement part is small or tiny for the camera, you cannot see any jerk as we know both the characters are MGR. Such is the work of the camera man Ramu. Watch the eye movement of Wanderer when King speaks his condition and his plans.

The conversation scene between King and Wanderer is good example for double action scenes, concentration should be on the technical side but remember the dialogues are also very well written and used by MGR, the dialogues are by Kannadasan and Ravindran a good balance between audio and visual.

I added this clip to continue to show the brilliance, very simple technique but awesome to watch. Wanderer as King was speaking with the Queen enacted by M.N.Rajam. These characters standing near a big glass window. M.G.Chakrapani takes King MGR to show him that his wife is cheating King MGR. The camera shows Wanderer and Queen now the camera turns left to show the King entwined by his enemies. First it appeared to me two shots interconnected. I slowed the clip and watched frame by frame there was no jerk, here the distance between both MGR characters are more when compared to the above conversation scene between King and Wanderer. With second one I came to conclusion that Wanderer and Queen shot is back projection and the camera spins to King MGR side that is live character, watch the camera gets inside the set and you can see 3D view of King MGR side.

Dialogue Scenes:

I think this is one movie were MGR has spoken a lot of dialogues the dialogues are not lengthy which is supposed to be protocol for historical movies. The time was 1958 the dialogue was ruling the tamil movie world. Kannadasan who was also a D.M.K. and Ravindran is very close to MGR. Both the writers had one concept that worked well. MGR had told that both of them belonged to same kind of principles that made MGR very easy going with them.

In this clip I took the famous one liners, when Wanderer insists to give him powers to make law, both the Ministers look dumb struck watch now in a second three shots are joined. one shot prime minister looks to the side of Commander, second shot Commander looks to the side of Prime Minister and third the Prime Minister looking to MGR. I conclude that first and third shot are one shot and MGR used the last part of the first shot for third one. Remember the importance is for dialogues only but the visual is balanced evenly.

I added this to glorify MGR because all the Actors in the world have proclaimed some heroic deeds but I feel MGR only had fulfilled what he said in the screen that he had done in his life. Look into the dialogue that he is giving away half of the property to the deaf and dumb. (Remember the Will of MGR in 1986). The other laws Wanderer as King proclaims are the one MGR done in his political career. I think MGR had some time travel mechanism that he knew what are going to be happen in the future.

This one video clip is special that I have touched the cup used by MGR in this movie. Out of these two cups which one I took into my hands I don’t know. Both are looking same.
