Yesterday 07.11.2019 is the 50th Year of Nam Nadu movie release. Produced by Vijaya International, this down to earth story, laced with the memorable role of our beloved Leader Puratchi Thalaivar MGR as Durai, the reformer, the messiah of the downtrodden, succeeding in removing corrupt politicians, power-hungry elites from the society.

It was in the year 1984 I watched this movie in a theatre. But I was unfortunate that I missed the climax fight as there was no bus service after 10 pm. Later on, I watched this movie a couple of times the movie remained fresh every time I see. I wondered why MGR was not given the best actor award for this film? 

MGR–A Film On Makkal Thilagam

2017 is the centenary year of beloved Leader Puratchi Thalaivar MGR, MGR fan clubs, associations and as well as the Government are celebrating in grand manner.

Recently I happened to see an ad in Daily Thanthi that a new movie on the life story of MGR is going to be produced by Ramana Communications who had already produced life of Kamaraj movie.

I also saw that the shooting was held and the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Edappadi Palanisamy presiding the function. The movie is been directed by A.Balakrishnan and for the first short Satish Kumar acted as MGR.

Let us go back a few years many have started the project for small screen and as well as for big screen. Do you remember Idhayam Pesugirathu Manian presented MGR life story in Sun TV which telecasted couple of episodes and I don’t know what happened to the remaining episodes.

Science Fiction Movie

Sri MGR Year 100, 29th June, Thursday

Science fiction genre is seldom used in Tamil movies and we all know that our beloved Leader Puratchi Thalaivar MGR had acted in one sci-fi movie "Kalai Arasi" which was released in 1963. Nowadays frequently aired though the movie is more than 50 years but still has the entertainment value. 

Below is the review written for "Kalai Arasi" movie in Indian Express newspaper in April 1963. 

Film stories revolving round "doubles" have been quite numerous on the screen. Sarodi pictures "Kalai Arasi" adds one more to that category of pictures.

A social-cum-fantasy, the film is now running to crowded houses at Plaza, Murugan, Mekala and Jayaraj in the city.

The physical resemblance between two women and the complications it creates are treated here more as an off-shoot of the story than being its main plank.

The central character in the story is a young woman (P.Bhanumathi) who is kidnapped by a man from outer space, and is whisked off to a planet in a flying saucer. There she teaches music to the daughter of a space-king and propagates the cultural heritage of South India to the inhabitants in the planet.

Meanwhile, the father of the girl continues his search for her and through his ward meets another insane girl, looking exactly like his own daughter.

Mohan (M.G.Ramachandran) the college-mate of the zamindar's daughter, takes upon himself to find the girl and after over-powering one of the spacemen, air dashes to the planet in the flying saucer. He finds her and works his way to come down to the earth. How the young man overcomes all his obstacles in the planet and how the identity of the two girls is established, form the climax of the film, which is studded with a plethora of synthetic thrills, stunts and chases.

M.N.Nambiar, P.S.Veerappa, N.S.Narayana Pillai, Rajashree, Kumari Saraswathi, G.Shakuntala, S.R.Janaki, C.T.Rajakantham, Kamala and Mohana are the other members of the cast. 

Directed by A.Kasilingam, the film has all the ingredients that make a successful box office production. 

The film is exceptionally good in outdoor and trick photography, for which credit goes to the cinematographer J.G.Vijayam. Music by K.V.Mahadevan is good.

Digital Delight

Many old movies are being digitized and re-released frequently. Couple of years back we observed many of our beloved Leader Puratchi Thalaivar MGR starrer movies such as Nadodi Mannan, Adimai Penn and Ulagam Sutrum Valiban were digitized and released over South India. Recently Rickshawkaran was re-released in digital and DTS format.

This week 16.6.2017, Oriental Pictures "Ninaithathai Mudipavan" was released in 15 theatres in around Chennai city. The film distributor had given many ads in leading newspapers for this digital delight. The response is good. More news will be published in our blog soon.

Second Week

Sri MGR Year 100, 12th March, Sunday

Old theatres in and around Chennai are the heaven for the distributors for re-releasing old movies and particularly Puratchi Thalaivar MGR movies. And one such theatre is Mahalakshmi. Couple of years back theatre management converted old system of showing movies into DTS and Qube format. And from then on Mahalakshmi theatre was showing new movies. 

"Ayirathil Oruvan"  Second Week Poster

I have to get past the theatre daily for my work and I use to see that every week a new movie been released in this theatre. And to my knowledge I have not seen that movie for a second week run. Last week Divya Films have released "Ayirathil Oruvan" as 3 shows on the eve of Jayalalithaa's birthday. And the Sunday evening show was houseful! Lots of images and videos were uploaded and shared by MGR fans in social media. 

Due to the huge response from the fans, "Ayirathil Oruvan" movie is now screened for the second week. It is unprecedented for a Di, DTS movie release in Mahalakshmi to see a second week run. Mr.Chockalingam of Divya Films have forwarded the second week poster to share in our MGR blog. 

Curtain Raiser–Thazhampoo

Sri MGR Year 98, 11th October, Sunday

Sri Bala Murugan Films Thazhampoo movie was released on 23rd October 1965. This 23rd is the Golden jubilee year. Thazhampoo is a black and white movie, which had a 50 days run.

MGR character name is Durairajan, but only called as Durai in the entire movie. K.R.Vijaya is the heroine, Nambiyar and M.R.Radha were the movie villains. Story is by Kottarakara, screenplay by G.Balasubramaniam and dialogs by Aroordass. Music is composed by K.V.Mahadevan and lyrics by Kannadasan, Vali, Alangudi Somu and Trichy Thiyagarajan.

As part of the work for 50th year of Thazhampoo movie release, I happened to see a screen shot showing list of theatres surprisingly most of the movies shown are of 1965. Some movie titles are clearly visibly they are:

Veteran actress Manorama passed away yesterday at the age of 78. She has acted with our Puratchi Thalaivar MGR in many movies such as Vettaikaran, Thanipiravi, Padagotti, Kanchi Thalaivan, Ther Thiruvizha, Vivasahi, Kalangarai Vilakkam, Thazhampoo, Engal Thangam, Chandrodhayam and Neerum Nerupum etc.,

She has the distinction to have acted with five Chief Ministers, with Peraringnar Anna and Karunanidhi in drama, MGR, Jayalalitha and N.T.Ramarao in films.

Her memorable movies with MGR which had occupied screen space with him are less, they are as an quarrelling wife of Nagesh in Chandrodhayam, fisherwoman in Padagotti and as a spy of Narasimha Pallavan in Kanchi Thalaivan.

Kalangarai Vilakkam 50th Year

Kalangarai Vilakkam is a mystery thriller movie which was released on 28th August 1965, today 28.8.2015 is the Golden jubilee year. The movie was produced by  Saravana Films G.N.Velumani and directed by K.Shankar. Our Puratchi Thalaivar MGR acted as an advocate.

Cast and Characters:

MGR	Ravi protagonist of the film, lawyer by profession.
Sarojadevi	Neela, having split personality problem obsessed with Pallava history and fictional character Sivakami. Mallika, sister of Gowri, professional dancer.
V.Gopalakrishnan	Dr.Gopal from Mahabalipuram who treats Neela’s illness.
Nagesh & Veerappan	Vasu and Devan two guides from Mahabalipuram.
M.N.Nambiyar	Antagonist of the movie, Nagarajan, obsessed with money who also kills his own brother.
K.D.Santhanam	Rich person, Father of Neela and elder brother of Nagarajan.
G.Sakunthala	Gowri, Nagarajan’s lover and she has a sister named Mallika who looks like Neela.
Manorama	Mohini, who marries one of the Mahabalipuram guide.

Story:

Ravi (MGR) who is the top most lawyer and an artist, on his court holiday visits Mahabalipuram, there on the middle of the road he finds a girl, Neela (Sarojadevi) dancing. She goes up the Lighthouse and tries to commit suicide, Ravi holds her and finds that she is obsessed with Pallava history and fictional character Sivakami. Ravi says that he is King Narasimhavarman (the lover of Sivakami in the story Sivakamiyin Sambatham) she changes her mind, at the same time Dr.Gopal (V.Gopalakrishnan) friend of Ravi comes in search of Neela. They both take her to her home. Her father who is paralysed, thanks Ravi for his timely help, he also finds that Ravi’s father Chinnadurai is his old friend. Nagarajan (Nambiyar) his younger brother enters the scene and apologies for his negligence. Neela’s father explains that Neela who is a historical researcher on Pallava reign had a fall in the library then she had this problem (split personality disorder). Then he asks Ravi to stay with him until Neela gets treated.

The days roll by Dr.Gopal gets imported medicine for the treatment. Neela starts to show the sign of recovery. All of them feels happy except Nagarajan who has an eye over the estate of his brother. He visits his lover’s home, Gowri (G.Sakunthala) who begs  him to marry her and that she can lead a respectful life. Nagarajan promises that if his plans work well then he will amaze his brothers property after the death of his brother and his daughter. He ask Gowri’s help by sending her sister Mallika who looks like Neela. She hesitates first but later she accepts.

 

During new moon day Neela’s father gives his last will and testament to Ravi and ask him to go through, if he finds all the points are satisfactory to him, then register the Will. Ravi objects the points in the Will stating that he has blind faith over him. Neela’s father ask him to be the executor of the Will and estate and also marry Neela. He also asks to accompany Neela for a walk. Ravi takes her outside, the split personality arises when Neela hears a rhythmic tapping. Ravi comes to know that fact and tries his best to avoid.

Meanwhile Nagarajan messes with Ravi’s car and takes Neela with him. Instead going to her home, Nagarajan takes her to his secret place and she is held as captive. Now he replaces Neela with Mallika. He takes her to Neela’s house. Ravi suspects her. The next day when Mallika walks outside one of Nagarajan’s men mistakes her as Neela and tries to take her back. Ravi comes in time and thrashes the goons while fighting Mallika gets hurt in the back. The cut was deep and she is treated by Dr.Gopal.

 

After this incidence Dr.Gopal comes to know that Ravi is in love with Neela, and Ravi paints a portrait of Neela. Nagarajan ask Mallika to get the attention of Ravi and get him to the Lighthouse. She does what she was told after entering the lighthouse, Nagarajan men grabs her, at the same time Nagarajan on top of the lighthouse throws Neela down. When Ravi and Dr.Gopal reaches the lighthouse they witnesses the fall of Neela, Ravi grabs her while Dr.Gopal checks her pulse and pronounce that Neela has died from the fall.

Ravi and Dr.Gopal enters the room of Neela’s father for taking leave but they find that Neela’s father had swollen sleeping pills and had died. Nagarajan becomes the owner of the estate of the deceased. Dr.Gopal who is the best friend of Ravi tries his best to get Ravi back to normal life. He takes him to a dance programme with the of Bharathidasan songs. There they happen to meet Mallika who performs for the song “Sangay Muzhangu” They both feel that Neela is alive. In the makeup room Ravi peeks inside and sees that Mallika’s back has the scar from the fighting incident and tells this to Dr.Gopal.

 

Now Ravi plans to meet Mallika through Dr.Gopal, he tells Mallika that Ravi has fallen love with Neela who died from the fall from the lighthouse. She feels pity for Ravi and due course she falls in love with Ravi. Nagarajan comes to know about this love and Mallika wishing Ravi to marry, Nagarajan ask Mallika to invite him to the house, but he plans to kill Ravi through his henchmen. Ravi goes to meet Mallika but was confronted by Nagarajan men, he fights and gets hold of one of his men (Puthur Natarajan) who tells the whereabouts of Mallika.

Ravi sends Dr.Gopal again to ask Mallika for the marriage, she accepts and she marries Ravi without the knowledge of Nagarajan. Gowri asks one promise from Mallika that she will not reveal what has happened in Mahabalipuram.

On the first night Ravi while speaking with Mallika taps rhythmically to provoke her split personality but understands that she has no reaction for the tapping. Then Ravi makes a drama and then she says about her stay in Mahabalipuram. Ravi mentions this to Dr.Gopal and they make a plan that Ravi is mentally sick and will become good only when he goes back to Mahabalipuram. As planned Mallika visits her sister Gowri to get the permission to visit Mahabalipuram for the remedy of her husband, with hesitation she permits, but the news reaches Nagarajan who tries to stop her, Ravi and Nagarajan fights out and Nagarajan gets injured.

On reaching Mahabalipuram Ravi tries to get the answer from Mallika, she tells the truth to him but she does not know what happened after that. Ravi does not accept what she says, to prove her innocence, Mallika rushes to the lighthouse. At the same time Gowri comes there and reveals the full truth that Mallika has acted as Neela and Nagarajan killed Neela by pushing her from the lighthouse. Nagarajan enters the scene but Gowri swallows the poison takes her life, same time a dummy dressed as Mallika falls from the lighthouse which gives an impression to Nagarajan that Mallika also died, Nagarajan in villainous trance laughs and tells Ravi that he had killed not only Neela but also his own brother. He further mentions there is no evidence to prove him guilty as the two prime evidences Gowri and Mallika had died.

Ravi’s plan ends perfectly as Police and Magistrate who were hiding behind the rocks had recorded the whole truth as Nagarajan mentioned everything he had did. Police arrests Nagarajan and Mallika. The Court condemns him to death penalty and Mallika who had indirectly helped the murder gets 3 months prison sentence. After 3 months Ravi and Mallika gets united and they live happily ever after.

All the six mesmerizing songs and background music was composed by M.S.Viswanathan. Apart from Kannadasan and Vaali, Panchu Arunachalam who was working as an assistant to Kannadasan penned the song - Pon Ezhil puthathu.

In the duet song Pon Ezhil, MGR looks very charming his flattened stomach, broad shoulders, graceful look, bewitching smile even in black and white he captivates us. Imagine how his fans should have reacted when Sarojadevi watches the transformation of Ravi into Narasimhavarman, the camera begins to focus and show the mighty stance of Narasimhavarman on screen. For the couple of days I was watching this song again and again still my desire not fulfilled. Rightful to the lyric “pon” gold “ezhil” beauty.

MGR has done the Narasimhavarman character twice, once in Kanchi Thalaivan movie and secondly in Kalangarai Vilakkam. To my knowledge maybe he is the only one to do the character twice.

Kalangarai Vilakkam had only one element taken from the movie Vertigo that is changing the person before the kill. All the other elements of the movie is entirely of script writer.

Behind Nadodi Mannan Success

For the Golden Jubilee year of Nadodi Mannan special post, I took some points from the book titled “Yarukku Vetri” written by our beloved Leader Puratchi Thalaivar MGR, a special edition released after the success of Nadodi Mannan in the year 1958, in that book he has mentioned the persons responsible for the success, the cooperation given by them, the name of the persons including the artists, script writers to name of the persons who did not show up in the title card. The post that was published on 21st August 2008 in srimgr.com the article and as well as the video were inspired from that book. 

MGR’s bodyguard K.P.Ramakrishnan who also worked in the Nadodi Mannan movie had written the article with his son R.Govindaraj which was published in Dinamalar issue dated 26th October 2011, Trichy edition. He has forwarded that article to share with us through MGR blog.

In the article K.P.Ramakrishnan recollects that in the set of Kalai Arasi MGR was speaking about three persons who gave their help for Nadodi Mannan movie. The three people MGR lists is S.S.Vasan who granted movie camera for shooting the climax scene involving large and miniature sets, K.Subramaniam, the Director who helped our Thalaivar in supervising the movie and procuring colour negatives without any benefit for him and also helping him in outdoor shooting done in Munnar. Thirdly is the studio owner of Vijaya Vauhini, Nagi Reddy for his assistance in shooting the movie.

Rickshawkaran 44

Sri MGR Year 98, 30th May, Saturday

Yesterday 29.5.2015 is the 44th Anniversary of release of our beloved Leader Puratchi Thalaivar MGR’s super hit movie Rickshawkaran. The movie was produced by Sathya movies, the first colour film from the production house and also this movie fetched the National Film Award for Best Actor to our beloved Leader MGR for the year 1971 , the first time for a Tamil movie actor (Bharat Award). 

Story:

An Ex-service man Selvam (MGR) is a Rickshaw driver happens to see Manickam (Stunt Sankar) been murdered and burnt by Kailasam (Asokan) in daylight. Manickam is also one of the rickshaw drivers who is looking after motherless child. The accused Kailasam gets released by the clever defense lawyer and his relative Dharmaraj (Major Sundararajan). Selvam takes the child to the orphanage and appeals the case in the High Court. Meanwhile Dharmaraj was promoted as Judge.

Another incident Uma (Manjula) a college girl on the brink of kidnapping was saved by Selvam but was punished in the Court because Uma does not come to court to prove his innocence. 

Dharmaraj now a new man starts to worry about his behaviours and how he had lead his life. The flashback shows that he is a killer who has killed his wife Kamala (Sakunthala, Selvam’s sister) with the help of Kailasam when she had a baby girl. On her death she gave her baby to her friend Parvathi (Padmini) who is married to a rowdy Karmegam (R.S.Manohar) on his return from jail Karmegam mistakes she has given birth to a girl and tries to kill her. Parvathi escapes from Karmegam and lives lonely. She has to protect Uma from Dharmaraj and Kailasam and as well as she should live unnoticed from her husband Karmegam. 

Parvathi lives by selling food to Rickshaw drivers. She knows that Selvam has saved Uma but she did not tell him anything about her past life. Meanwhile Selvam happens to see Uma and takes her to the Judge Dharmaraj house, there she comes to know about Selvam and she was asked by Dharmaraj to visit her often.

Kailasam who is the Chairman of the college does unlawful business of sending young girls to foreign countries illegally. And Uma is his target, he tries his best to kidnap her but Selvam was always present to guard her. Turn of events, Uma comes to know about her past life and also Selvam comes to know who is Parvathi and what had happened to his sister. Uma kills Dharmaraj at point blank range and she runs from the house, Selvam grabs her and hands over to police.

Selvam understands that the girl is dumb and feels that she is not real Uma. With the help of Police & Karmegam, Selvam enters the lair of Kailasam fights all his henchmen and finally releases the real Uma from the clutches of Kailasam. 

The movie has 5 songs:

1. Angay siripavargal sirikattum (MGR’s philosophical song)

2. Ponnazhagu Penmai (Manjula introductory song)

3. Azhagiya Tamil Magal Ival (Duet song)

4. Kadaloram vangiya katru (MGR and Manjula song in a beach)

The action scenes are very different for this movie. MGR performed his stunts by driving the rickshaw and fighting with the goons. And not only that he also performed silambam from the rickshaw during the fight. The climax fight with Justin will give us goose bumps followed by fight using surl pattai. We will be in the edge of the seat during the climax of the film.

The way of rickshaw driver’s thinking towards the society and uplift of poor, an ex serviceman doing service to the people is new type of story telling which gained him the best actor award. 

Re Release Enga Veetu Pillai

Vijaya Vauhini first Tamil colour movie and our beloved Leader MGR’s super hit movie of 1965, Enga Veetu Pillai was re-released this week in Mahalakshmi theatre.

Recently Mahalakshmi theatre was renovated with Qube system and DTS and they showed mostly new movies.

The posters for Enga Veetu Pillai mentioned as Qube format. But the movie is not digital.

The print is worst with lot of cuts but the audio is satisfactory. Around 800 people came to watch the evening show of our Puratchi Thalaivar MGR starrer dual action movie Enga Veetu Pillai.

Panam Padaithavan 50th Year

Today 27.3.2015 is the Golden Jubilee year of Panam Padaithavan movie. Produced and directed by T.R.Ramanna this family drama movie is star studded with our Puratchi Thalaivar in the lead, K.R.Vijaya and Sowcar Janaki as the heroines, Nagesh as MGR’s brother, T.S.Balaiah as his father. Dialogues by Sakthi T.K.Krishnasamy, stunts by R.N.Nambiyar, cherography for the song Paruvathil Konjam and Kan pona pokkile by Joseph Krishna, songs Antha Maapillai and Pavazha kodiyile by Thangappan, camera M.K.Rehman.

This movie was released during the successful run, full and full entertainment flick Enga Veetu Pillai and it is succeeded by the super hit movie Ayirathil Oruvan. Unfortunately Panam Padaithavan having good family story, top notch performances and memorable songs was over shadowed by mega movies Enga Veetu Pillai and Ayirathil Oruvan.

Story:

Raja (MGR) is an athlete he goes with his brother Balu (Nagesh) to Calcutta (now Kolkata) to participate in an athletic meet. On his way his car accidentally knocks a drunkard, Masilamani (father of K.R.Vijaya) and Raja takes him to his house. There Raja meets Shanthi (K.R.Vijaya), she thanks him, love at first sight. 

During the competition Raja and Balu befriended by Rema’s father. He ask them to stay with him. Rema who is an ultra modern girl (Sowcar Janaki) likes Raja, Balu likes her sister Uma (Geethanjali).

  

Her father wanted his daughters to marry brothers of the same family, so that they can live together. As Raja did not wish to marry Rema, rejects the offer, dejected Balu becomes a drunkard. Then Raja scarifies his love for his brother.

 

Raja (MGR) getting to ready to fight and save his brother

During the marriage Rema comes to know the fact that Raja is in love with Shanthi and that he is unwillingly marrying her. On that night Shanthi tries to suicide by jumping from Howrah bridge but she was saved. Masilamani phones Raja and informs the message, Raja leaves the house to see Shanthi and to console her, which Rema dislikes.

Raja meets Shanthi in the hospital and gets promise from her that she will not do this act again. When he returns home Rema questions him and as a revenge, the next day he makes her friend Joker (Manohar) to call her, Raja takes the phone call, voluntarily Rema answers the call and tells him a lie that her friend is hospitalized and she needs to see.

As planned Rema meets Joker in the Boat Club, she understands that leaving the house in late hours and visiting Joker is not a revenge. Joker tries to molest her, Raja enters and tries to save her, but Joker shoots and kills Rema and later Joker was arrested by the Police.

Raja was depressed by the loss of his wife he joins the Army and goes to battle field. He frequently writes letters to his family. Raja gets wounded in action and was discharged from the service. Raja returns home and his brother gets the consent from Shanthi to get married with Raja.

Shanmuga Pillai (Raja’s father) who first was interested in the marriage proposal asks to stop the marriage as Shanthi’s father Masilamani is from  a lower caste. Raja’s mother explains that Masilamani is from a lower caste loved Shanmuga Pillai’s sister (Aunt of Raja) married and she died giving birth to a child then Masilamani with his child went to Calcutta. Raja (in a dark shirt like Periyar EVR) speaks the evil of caste system and wants to marry Shanthi even if the world is against him.

The marriage takes place with small hurdles caused by Kuppan the henchmen of Shanmuga Pillai. Raja gets work as a physical instructor. Months roll by and Shanthi becomes pregnant.

Balu is always pestered by Shanmuga Pillai that he need grand children. Balu hatches a plan and gets the promise of Shanthi that she will help to unite the family. As per the plan Uma acts as she is pregnant and returns to Calcutta. Shanthi gives birth to a son. Now Uma and Balu return and ask the favour of lending their son so that he can live in Shanmuga pillai house. With hesitation she gives the child. Raja comes to know this later and scolds Shanthi for her deeds.

Shanmuga Pillai was captivated by the grand son presence in his house. But Masilamani wanted to unite Raja and Shanthi goes to Shanmuga Pillai and asks the child to return, now Shanmuga Pillai comes to know that the parent is Raja & Shanthi he then gives back the child to Masilamani.

Due to the love for his grand son Shanmuga Pillai next morning goes to Raja’s house and ask to return but comes to know that the child and Masilamani are missing since yesterday. He gets a letter from Kuppan about the ransom for the grand son return. Raja and Shanmuga Pillai meets Kuppan, then Raja confronts Kuppan and saves his son. Finally the family gets united.
