Sri MGR Year 103rd, 6th June, Saturday

For a couple of days, there was some shouting going on in the media that more of their actor's movies were telecasted other than our Puratchi Thalaivar MGR. In the lockdown period, number one hero movies telecasted is MGR. 

We MGR fans feel pathetic for their condition. All these days MGR movies were telecasted in several channels unknown to them. This is not first for us, this is a continuation. Due to Covid19 lockdown most of them are now glued to the TV screen and able to count their movies that were telecasted. We again say before lockdown too they were regularly telecasting MGR movies. 

Below is the list of MGR movies telecasted during the first lockdown period. The list was compiled by Bangalore Vinod.

Look Back 1976

Sri MGR Year 97, 26th April, Saturday

In the year 1976, our Puratchi Thalaivar MGR movie and his party were in top gear. In that year 1976 3 MGR movies were released they were Neethiku Thalaivanangu, Uzhaikum Karangal and Ooruku Uzhaipavan.

This post is concerned on the release of Uzhaikum Karangal, the release of special editions, news and informations.

Above image is the ad given in Dinamalar 9.3.1975 for the shooting of Uzhaikum Karangal. Sketch work for MGR character Rangan in the movie, unlike from the sketch the costume of MGR character was different instead of banian a shirt, Andhra dhoti, wrist bands and he carried a stick with Two leaves symbol.

  

These are the two covers for Thirai Ulagam issue the one in the right is the special edition published for the release of Uzhaikum Karangal.

Below images are also from Thirai Ulagam special edition. The image to right has images from the movie. We can see a deleted scene, MGR sitting and listening to a small boy which did not find place in the final cut.

Uzhaikum Karangal Frame By Frame

Sri MGR Year 97, 17th February, Monday

Kovai Chezhian produced one MGR movie titled Uzhaikum Karangal. The movie was peppered with political scenario and dialogs of post 1972. The highlight of the movie is the performance of MGR, Deer Horn (Maan Kombu) fight and philosophical song.

Recently Uzhaikum Karangal movie was telecasted in Sun Life channel, I captured some of the images to share in our MGR Blog.

Sri MGR Year 96, 10th August, Saturday

The title cards are always different for every movies, some will have animated while some will have artistic. In MGR movies the title cards had background related to the movie or sceneries.

In Ulagam Sutrum Vaaliban the title scrolls over bunch of flowers, photos in Rickshawkaran, animation in Anbay Vaa.

In Uzhaikkum Karangal the title card is designed with the image of MGR doing various works relating to the title of the movie (Labouring Hands).

In this movie the title card is thirteen in number with mostly MGR in red shirt.

The title card shows MGR working in the field with a plough followed by working with hammer.

 

Various poses of MGR as farming, watering and harvesting and finally showing a thumbs up for the director’s credit.

Uzhaikum Karangal

Sri MGR Year 95, 15th September, Saturday

K.C.Films Uzhaikum Karangal movie telecasted in KTV yesterday. I was very fortunate to watch till the end. Below are the images from Uzhaikum Karangal. The print was excellent.

 

  

 

MGR character name is Rangan who is good hearted and faithful servant of Village head and also the Chairman, Thangavelu. Rangan understands that his Master is corrupt and acquires money through social service. MGR stands against his master and subsequently MGR was out casted from his master’s house.

 

Pankajam a classical dancer saves MGR and she gives the knowledge about the world. She falls in love with MGR.

 

Rangan becomes a local hero the villagers gives him respect. MGR meets his love (Latha) and marries her.

 

  

 

People turn against the Village head and they send petition to the higher officials, and the village head loses his post and grudges against MGR and Thangavelu plans to kill him during a Deer horn fight.

 

  

 

MGR does the deer horn fight with perfect timing (his age was 59! at that time, unbelievable stunts)

 

     

 

Further Thangavelu plans to steal Nataraja Idol from the temple and MGR saves with Rudra thandavam dance.

 

     

 

Thangavelu plans to loot more money from the public with help of Thengai Srinivasan and Nagesh disguised as Saints. But fate was  different Thengai Srinivasan molests Thangavelu’s sister and she tries to commit suicide, in time MGR saves her and tries to make arrangement of her marriage with Thengai Srinivasan. Thangavelu tries to kill Thengai Srinivasan but one of Thengai Srinivasan man gets killed, MGR was accused and was jailed. In the court the classical dancer tries to take up the charges but MGR persuades her.

 

Finally MGR escapes from the prison and fights against his enemies and saves Thangavelu’s son. Thangavelu changes his mind and ask MGR to take care his son.

 

Only two songs are good and unfortunately KTV has deleted the Nalai Ulagai song due to the appearance of ADMK flag. Most of the scenes MGR appears with Two Leaves symbol embed stick, but they showed it clearly.

Uzhaikum Karangal Re-Release

K.C. Films MGR starrer Uzhaikum Karangal is re-released today in Coimbatore Delite. MGR Devotee Yukesh Babu passed this information and to share this in our MGR Blog.

The movie with political dialogues, deer horn fight and this particular song showing the ADMK flag is the highlight of Uzhaikum Karangal movie. A delight to watch for MGR Fans and MGR Devotees.

MGR Prophecy

There is no second opinion that MGR knew the pulse of the people, their taste for entertainment. MGR movies gave them what they needed within the boundaries of Tamil culture. MGR was the foremost in Movie World in propagating two political parties through his movies.

The Flag in Emgeeyar Pictures Banner, Red and Black costumes, character names like Maran, Karikalan, Elango, Udaya Suriyan etc. Montage of Rising Sun scenes, Light rays behind him and tattooing the symbol in his chest not only catapulted the party to higher levels but also put his party to the zenith of Power in 1967. From then on in Tamilnadu no other political party except Dravidian party has taken that place. ADMK was formed when MGR was ousted from DMK in October 10^th 1972.

After forming ADMK MGR needed the flag and symbol to be projected in the movies. His strategy though simple and different from what he used when he was in DMK. The character name did not changed, nor tattooed the symbol instead MGR used the border colour of the costume was different as in movies like Urimal Kural, Uzhaikum Karangal etc. placed the Election symbol Two Leaves in the Doors (Neethiku Thalai Vanangu) in his stick (Uzhaikum Karangal) oars (Meenava Nanban). Within 5 years he tried every possible chances in projecting the Party Flag and symbol and MGR triumphed.

This song clip is a classic example how MGR knew the pulse of his fans and how to motivate them. The song “Nalai Ulagai Ala Vendum” see the opening words how carefully he has choosen the words. Opting K.J.Yesudas instead of T.M.Soundararajan for this song. I feel that MGR at that time was the Leader of Political party he choosed K.J.Yesudas for his solo and philosophical songs to show the graceness in voice too.

Song Clip

The whole song, little slow has no dance number just everybody working in the field. But in the second stanza of this song “Vidiyum velai vara poguthu Dharmam theerpai tharapoguthu” the tempo of the song increases, the camera shows ADMK flag flying over a tree, the shot was so fast that the scene lasts for a second, but the appearance of party flag in midst of the song and appropriate line provoked enthusiasm for his fans. I experienced it! Watch MGR when he says these words he holds a bent stick a messiah like posture proclaiming that this truly will happen a kind of prophecy saying.

MGR was greatest technician there is no doubt this song is just an example to show his power and how he used the media.
