A Flexible and Deadly Blade

The urumi or curling blade in English is a type of weapon used in martial arts and its origin is from South India. This weapon is known in Tamil as ‘surul vaal’, as its name suggests, this weapon consists of a metal blade that is wielded like a whip. The surul vaal has often been described as one of the more bizarre martial arts weapon that entire world has seen. It is an extremely dangerous weapon, not only for those whom it is used against, but equally so for its wielder. Thus, this weapon is one that is exceptionally difficult to master.

This urumi or surul vaal was used by our Puratchi Thalaivar MGR for the climax action scene in "Rickshawkaran". After, MGR breaks away from the chains he draws the deadliest weapon from his belt which is the correct way of placing the surul vaal. 

MGR had used two different length weapons to perform this fight scene. One weapon length that MGR uses is nearly 4 feet long with four blades. The action scene lost roughly for two minutes. 

There is no knuckle guard only thumb guard is present for protection of the wielder, MGR has took lot of risk. We all know that Puratchi Thalaivar is well versed in various martial arts this surul vaal technique is taught in final level in Kalaripayattu. Because it is a difficult weapon to use.

This fight scene is more than enough for us but MGR while swinging the weapon over his shoulders in arcs, performs yet another breathtaking jump over oil barrel. MGR the master in martial arts and master entertainer. 

Digital Movies In 2016

Sri MGR Year 99, 24th August, Wednesday

The second half of the year 2016 will be a joyous period for MGR fans as digitally remastered MGR movies which are in pipe line are going to be released one by one.

The first to hit the screen will the blockbuster movie of 1971 Rickshawkaran. Recently the trailer release function was held with packed hall in Devi Paradise.

The movie will be screened on 21st September 2016, thanks to Yukesh Babu for informing us about the release date.

Ulagam Sutrum Valiban which was digitally remastered to HD version will be released soon. Apart from this Puratchi Thalaivar Bond-esque flick “Ragasiya Police 115” is also under digital conversion.

“Not only 2016 but also in the Centenary year of beloved Leader MGR, we will be witnessing many more movie releases.”

Rickshawkaran 42nd Year

Sri MGR Year 96, 31st May, Friday

Sathya Movies Rickshawkaran celebrated its 42nd year on 29.5.2013. The movie which fetched MGR the best actor award for the year 1971. MGR is the first Tamil Actor to receive the National honour.

 

  

 

 

A special edition was published by Thiraiulagam for Rickshawkaran.

A different fight scene from MGR movie. 80 percent of the fight scene is  done without getting down from the cycle rickshaw and the remaining 20 percent as usual fight, and after thrashing them MGR does a turn with the cycle rickshaw and with a majestic look, wow great performance.

Sri MGR Year 94, 29th May, Sunday

 

In the year 1971 MGR movies such as Kumarikottam, Rickshawkaran, Neerum Nerupum and Oru Thai Makkal (5 years under production) were released. In the same year Tamil Nadu saw the General Election DMK with MGR won the Election. And in movie career MGR won the best Actor Award (Bharath Award) for acting in the movie Rickshawkaran.

 

29th May 1971 – 29th May 2011 40th Anniversary for the movie Rickshawkaran a special post by MGR Devotee S.Vinod from Bangalore.

Box Office Emperor MGR - Chennai Collection Records

These records are from Thirai Ulagam forwarded by B.S.Raj.

MGR took the Bow as a Hero in 1947 to the end of 1977, and he never acted in a Guest role after becoming Hero in 'Rajakumari'. Total movies acted 136 (excluding the movies Avasara Police 100 and Nallathai Nadu Ketkum) The hero acted movies comes to 115.

MGR movies which generated above Rs.13,00,000/- (13 lakhs) in Chennai City alone are ten. I got the collection details of eight movies so far. The last two movies Ninaithathai Mudipavan and Pallandu Vazhga collection details will be posted as soon as I get the info.

The collections are after the last day of the movie.

Enga Veetu Pillai (1965) – Rs.13,23,683.22

Adimai Penn (1969) – Rs.13,60,256.82

Mattukara Velan (1970) – Rs.13,21,376.11

These records were unbeaten to the end of 1978 in other words until MGR became the Chief Minister and when he left the Cinema world fully.

Previous weeks I had posted about Adimai Penn Re-release in Natraj theater, the collection is 95,000/- the movie was released with a time gap of 4 months and this collection is highest for any re-release movies in Chennai City particularly in Natraj Theater.
