41st Anniversary

Sri MGR Year 97, 11th May, Sunday

Today 11.5.2014 is the 41st Anniversary of Emgeeyar Pictures and one of the greatest hit movies of our beloved Puratchi Thalaivar MGR movie Ulagam Sutrum Vaaliban. The movie was produced and directed by MGR. Principal photography of the movie began in September 8th 1970 in Expo 70, Osaka, Japan and released 11th May 1973.

  

The movie was released amidst hurdles created by the then DMK government. Tax for posters were increased to make this film drop out of the box office. Ulagam Sutrum Vaaliban created box office records despite without help of posters. That was the mass of MGR, unprecedented  and unique in Tamil movie industry.

To commemorate, srimgr.com is publishing for the first time images from the special editions and ads scanned from the original source material.

Thirai Ulagam and Thirai Seithi magazines released special editions of Ulagam Sutrum Vaaliban. These magazines are preserved to this date and shared with us.

Above is the ad given in Tamil Newspapers showing the list of theatres which had continuous 100 shows houseful, a rare feet.

Silver jubilee ad given in Dinamani dated 29.10.1973 during its 25th week. Apart from this box office the movie was insured and two negatives were printed and the negatives were given in custody of Hindi film actor and director Raj Kapoor.

Shooting Date

Sri MGR Year 96, 7th June, Friday

We are actively searching and finding out the exact dates of some of MGR movie shooting. We have some data with us. Of this today's post is about the shooting date of Emgeeyar Pictures Ulagam Sutrum Vaaliban movie.

 

Our beloved Leader Puratchi Thalaivar MGR along with 26 members including actors, actress and technicians left Chennai on 5th September for the shooting of Ulagam Sutrum Tamilan which was later renamed to Ulagam Sutrum Vaaliban.

 

MGR’s article Thirai Kadal Odi thirai padam eduthom in Bommai Magazine which was later published as a Book titled Ulagam Sutrum Vaaliban uruvana kathai in that article MGR tells the exact date of commencement of Ulagam Sutrum Vaaliban shooting. More about the Book click here.

The first shot of the movie was on 8th September 1970 and the next day is shooting for the song Ulagam Azhagu kalaigalil surangam.

 

 

The above image with three pictures are from Ulagam Sutrum Vaaliban movie, the two images to your left are from Expo 70 which was shot on 8 and 9th of September 1970, the difference in MGR hat. From 8th to 13th MGR completed the full shoot of Expo 70 portion.

 

The image to your right (MGR hugging two kids) is from the song Sirithu Vazha vendum, shot in Haw Par Villa (Singapore) also known as Tiger Balm Garden. The entire scene was shot in two days that is from 18th and 19th October 1970.

40th Year

Sri MGR Year 96, 11th May, Saturday

Today 11.5.2013 is the 40th year of Emgeeyar Pictures Ulagam Sutrum Vaaliban. This same day 40 years back the movie was released amidst the hurdles created by the then ruling party DMK.

The movie was released without any posters and created history unparallel to this day. The movie was a feather to MGR’s cap as the Director, Producer and as well as the Actor.

Mr.Murugan (M.G.R) is an Indian scientist who has recently discovered how to store a part of the energy unleashed from lightning. He tells this in the Hong Kong scientists' conference. He tells that he won't reveal his discovery to the world since the world is at the brink of world war III and his research may be used for destructive purposes. Scientist Mr.Bairavan (Asokan) tells Murugan is just showing off without researching anything. So Mr.Murugan demonstrates it and destroys the vital research notes which upsets the other scientists. Bairavan negotiates with him to sell the research to a foreign country which Murugan refuses. Murugan then departs with his girlfriend Miss.Vimala (Manjula) for a world tour. He tells to Vimala that he actually pretended like destroying the research notes and he has kept the notes in some safe place. He was willing to use them and research further so that his research is used for productive purposes. Bairavan who have been following them hears this and follows them wherever they go. Bairavan wants the research notes so that he can sell them to some countries for a lumpsum amount.

In Singapore, Bairavan shoots Murugan with a special gun (not killing him). Vimala faints on seeing this. Murugan became mentally affected and is taken into Bairavan's custody.

Now comes Mr.Raju (M.G.R) a CBCID officer and Murugan's younger brother who comes to Singapore in search of his brother. How he finds his brother and what happens to others form the rest of the story.

 

 

The most famous duet song often repeated in theaters during the re-release.

 

The last part of the movie was shot in Expo 70 beautiful song with nearly 250 shots and a spellbinding performance.

Expo 70

Yes that is the Expo 70 Full photo. Most of them replied which I edited so that others will say it easily without guessing.Expo 70 held in Osaka Japan in the Senri Hills, spread in 815 acres. The theme of the expo 70 is Progress and Harmony for Mankind. Date of inauguration was March 15 to September 13, 1970 (i.e. 183 Days) Exposition was called "Hakurankai" in Japanese.
The following nations had individual pavilions at Expo 70. The Expo 70 had 5 entrances and also the Emblem of Expo 70 is after Cherry Blossom with 5 petal symbolizing 5 major continents and Red circle in the centre for Japan. Total visitors 64 millions and in this one person is MGR. So MGR now known as 1 in 64 millions! Rather than 1 in one thousand (Ayirathil Oruvan)
In "Ulagam Sutrum Vaaliban" Expo 70 scenes, MGR used mostly Soviet Pavilion, Mitsubishi Pavilion, Rose Garden and Australian Pavilion. Some shots are from Korean Pavilion, French Pavilion, Fuji Group & Gas Pavilion. Night shots are from Telecommunications Pavilion. And also MGR used some shots in Ariel cableway and moving walks during the song sequence.
It took me two weeks watching the movie and pausing often to note down the pavilions and Internet searching to write this Blog. I hope it will satisfy MGR fans and gave some details about Expo 70 scenes. No body in the Website has mentioned the shooting of any film. And thanks to Yuki Chiyama teaching me the Japanese culture to me.
