Engal Thangam 41st Year

Sri MGR Year 94, 9th October, Sunday

This day 41 years back Makkal Thilagam MGR movie Engal Thangam was released. MGR Devotee Bangalore S.Vinod and Tirupur Ravichandran has helped me to publish this post for the 41st Anniversary of the movie.

Four movies were released in 1970 they are:

Mattukara Velan - 14.01.1970
En Annan - 21.05.1970
Thalaivan - 24.07.1970
Thedi Vantha Mapillai - 29.08.1970
Engal Thangam - 09.10.1970

Thalaivan is the only Black and White movie released in 1970.

Mekala Pictures first colour movie. Our beloved Leader Puratchi Thalaivar MGR acted freely for Mekala Pictures but he had to pay the Income Tax subsequently.

MGR acted in dual role though the role Thangam is the protagonist and another role as Small Savings Minister a cameo performance of another MGR. Four Chief Ministers have appeared in this movie, Anna Durai, Karunanidhi, MGR and Jayalalitha. One scene MGR receives the amount from Annadurai for getting prize in the lottery.

The story is that MGR – Thangam a Lorry driver he has a blind sister, one day AVM Rajan molests Thangam’s sister Pusphalatha, and Thangam tries to take revenge but he has to alter the plan since AVM Rajan’s mother gets promise on her death bed to reform his son. Thangam arranges the marriage of his sister with AVM Rajan, on the same day AVM Rajan helps to steal and was nearly caught by Police, here Thangam impersonates as AVM Rajan and escapes from the Police, the police mistakes Thangam as the culprit the search goes on, Thangam with help of Police officer’s daughter Jayalalitha and Thangam’s aide Cho bars the culprit and thus ends the story.

Kathakalatchebam song Man on the Moon by MGR with bald head makeup was breathtaking performance and highlight of the movie. The second hero was AVM Rajan.

There are five songs :

Don't touch me Mr.X, Naan Seththuppilachavaan, Naan Alavodu, Thanga Pathakithin and Mogam piranthathu. The song such as “Naan Seththu Pizhaichavanda” remembers the 1967 shooting of MGR.

The movie did a good performance in all A, B and C centres.

You can watch the full movie below
