Remembrance 2013 II

Sri MGR Year 96, 24th December, Tuesday

Today is the 26th death anniversary of our beloved Leader, Puratchi Thalaivar, Ponmanachemmal MGR, 26 years before when the tragic news that our King of Kings, God of the Poor has finally breathed his last was announced in radio and TV, widespread panic gripped his fans and devotees. They were left in the lurch the days that followed somehow brought back them to reality that still their God is alive with them in the form of movies, images and speech. To this day many of his followers make up their mind that MGR is not dead.

Today thousands of people came to pay their tributes in the final resting place of our Thalaivar. People from neighbouring states and as well from Singapore, Malaysia and United States also visited the memorial of MGR.

Vettaikaran

Sri MGR Year 96, 22nd December, Sunday

Yesterday Devar Films, 1964 super hit movie and our Puratchi Thalaivar starrer Vettaikaran was telecasted in Murasu TV. The print quality was excellent and they relayed without any cut, a pleasant evening to rejoice the movie.

vettaikarn_35-mm-film10   vettaikarn_35-mm-film

Vettaikaran was released on 14.1.1964 all over South and the movie was a grand success. MGR appeared in cowboy costume though not a western movie. MGR as hunter and so the title “Vettaikaran” (Hunter).

vettaikarn_35-mm-film2   vettaikarn_35-mm-film3

In all of his movies MGR acted energetically but in this movie his energy level is quite higher, he was very active and played as a rough action hero. The costumes a’ la unique MGR style costumes, tight fit. MGR looks very handsome and every frame he appears mesmerizes us by his charm and bewitching smile.

Gun slinging style is entirely different from other western movies MGR shows his own style. Below is the gun slinging style I was able to capture without much blur.

vettaikarn_35-mm-film4   vettaikarn_35-mm-film5

M.R.Radha performs as MGR’s Father in law, supporting role and no villain role, as usual Nambiyar is the villain but makes us believe that he has a brother which was revealed later that both the persons are same. Asokan does a brief cameo.

vettaikarn_35-mm-film6   vettaikarn_35-mm-film7

Nagesh in lighter role supported by Manorama and MGR’s Mother is M.V.Rajamma. From Devar films payroll Savithri acted instead of usual Heroin Sarojadevi, she does her role with absolute ease.

vettaikarn_35-mm-film8   vettaikarn_35-mm-film9

To know how fast is MGR’s movement in this movie during the action scene, (I had given one image to the left, the image below MGR getting out of the Jeep) fight with Devar the producer of the movie, MGR appears totally blur looks like he is out from an action comic strip, but we can clearly see Devar, that was one of MGR’s fastest move, even the camera cannot capture his fastness.

The movie has beautiful songs the first song “Unnai Arinthal” a MGR philosophical song nicely pictured and some shots looks candid. Other songs are Kannanukku yethanai Koilo, Manjal mugame, Katha nayagan kathai, Methuva Methuva thodalama and one sad song Velli Nila.

Coming 2014 is the Golden Jubilee year of Vettaikaran movie. A separate post will be updated on 14th January.

Ayirathil Oruvan Restored

Sri MGR Year 96, 9th December, Monday

One of our blog readers Muralidharan Murugan had informed me about the digital restoration of MGR Fans cult movie Ayirathil Oruvan by Divya Films Chockalingam who had already done such reworking with the song portions of Ulagam Sutrum Valiban way back in 1990s.

Earlier Emgeeyar Pictures three gems Nadodi Mannan, Adimai Penn and Ulagam Sutrum Valiban were released in Qube and Dts format. And this movie Ayirathil Oruvan deserved an uplift and the same is been done by Divya Films Chockalingam.

The article written by Karthik Subramanian for MGR movie conversion to DI, restoration and re-recording the back ground music is been published by The Hindu recently. Below is the article.

49 years after its release, MGR-Jayalalithaa starrer to return with re-recorded background score

Soon, one will get to hear the evergreen anthem of MGR — “Atho antha paravai pola vaazha vendum” — in digital surround sound at multiplexes across the state.

Nearly five decades after the release of the movie, featuring former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and iconic actor M.G. Ramachandran and current Chief Minister Jayalalithaa in lead roles, ‘Aayirathil Oruvan’ directed by B.R.Panthulu is getting ready for a digitally enhanced theatrical re-release in January.

Divya Films, which released the Sivaji Ganesan epic ‘Karnan’ in digital format in 2012 to a good response, is working on the finishing touches to the digital version of ‘Aayirathil Oruvan’ at the Prasad EFX studio in the city.

The digitally restored film will also feature a completely re-recorded background music (BGM) played out by an assistant of veteran film director M.S.Viswananthan. It has been recorded in digital surround sound. The technicians at Prasad EFX who had previously done the restoration for ‘Karnan’ and ‘Paasa Malar’ are working on technical aspects of the restoration, including preparing the ‘digital intermediates’ (DI) and scope conversion for converting the 35 mm film to digital scope.

G.Chockalingam of Divya Films says he has been working on restoring ‘Aayirathil Oruvan’ ever since he completed the release of digital ‘Karnan’. “The film negatives were in a more damaged stage than those of ‘Karnan’. So, we had to painstakingly apply the digital restoration and corrections to every frame of the 18 reels. With ‘Karnan,’ just three reels needed extra care. But here, the entire length of 2 hours and 45 minutes has been digitally enhanced and that is why it has taken this long to be restored,” he said.

Mr. Chockalingam plans to unveil the marketing strategy for the re-release on December 24, coinciding with M.G.Ramachandran’s death anniversary. The film has been slated for a January release.

According to the image given in The Hindu, we can see vast difference between both the versions. Lets hope the full movie output will be the same as they promised. Imagine how great it will be to hear the crystal clear voice of our Puratchi Thalaivar in the reworked format.

The movie had beautiful and mesmerizing tunes. All the songs were hit, the philosophical songs Kan pona pokile and Yenakoru Magan, two duet songs Pavala kodiele and Antha maapillai, Yen uir pirivathai and manicka thottil two sad songs are worth mentioning.

 poster

The songs that are still remembered by MGR Devotees and MGR Fans and the final stanza etched in the history forever.

A classical MGR duet song (dream song) MGR as Mughal Emperor. I imagine if this duet song alone in colour the depth will be more to the story.

MGR Fan

Sri MGR Year 96, 23rd November, Saturday

Here is an email from MGR Fan 53 years old Mr.Jayan from Singapore who is also a regular reader of our MGR Blog he wanted to share his experience and his likeness to our beloved Puratchi Thalaivar MGR. He also given the images of some of his collections.

MGR Fan Jayan, Father name Krishnan.

My name is Jayan and I am born and have been living in Singapore. I was first introduced to MGR thru Adimai Penn when it was released here in 1969. Ever since, I have become a huge MGR fan. Since then, I have watched all MGR films released here. Movies that run for a month are considered a huge success because of the small Tamil film audience here. Nalla Neram, Ulagam Sutrum Valiban ran to packed houses for more than a month in 1972-73. I have also watched Annan's (I call him that) earlier films on VHS tapes and DVDs. My favourite movie is Sirithu Vaazha Vendum. The fast pace of the movie, songs, MGR's dual role impressed me. I can never forget the double MGR fight scene - Annan's entrance whistling a tune, his costume with a cloth flower-like bow at his neck, the exciting fight sequence, and the background music! I had the fortune of meeting Annan when he visited Singapore as Chief Minister. Many fans waited for him on the ground floor of the Housing Development Board office where he was having a meeting in 1978 or 79. As the lift door opened, he greeted everyone with a handshake despite his busy schedule and smiled a warm smile. His hand felt warm and he had a firm grip. I felt his hands for about 2 days and I remember I did not wash that hand for about 1 and half days! A brief but unforgettable moment.

Big-Records
Over the years I have also collected many of Annan's movie records (about 120). I have attached photos of my collection. My most prized possession is a rare long playing record of Ulagam Sutrum Valiban with it's beautiful cover.

Small-Records

Ulagam-Sutrum-Valiban

His dialogues and song lyrics have taught good life values to me and all MGR fans. The line from the Pallandu Vazhgha song "Ondre Kulam Oruvanay Devan" has become my life philosophy. "Dairiyamaaga Sol Nee Manithan Thaana" from Oli Vilakku has taught me never to drink and smoke. He is truly "Kalaimagan Kalaimagal Punniyamo, Thaikulam Vazhangiya Seethanamo!" (from song 'Minminiyai Kanmaniyai' - Kannan En Kathalan movie). To all MGR fans - continue to spread the warmth and good messages of this wonderful man.

Golden Jubilee Year Parisu

Sri MGR Year 96, 15th November, Friday

Today 15.11.2013 is the Golden Jubilee Year of MGR movie Parisu, directed by Yoganand, story by Kottarakara, produced by Kottarakara and Yoganand, dialogs by Aroordass, music is by K.V.Mahadevan and lyrics by Kannadasan. The character name of MGR in this movie is Venu and he is a Police Officer.

parisu

A crime takes place in Lakshmi Jewellers and the Police entrusts the case to MGR who goes in disguise as a researcher there he meets Ponni (Savithri) her uncle is M.R.Radha and his boss is the thief M.N.Nambiyar (who disguise as an old man). She has a boat, MGR uses her boat for his investigation. Both fell in love in due course, which was not liked by M.R.Radha who has plan to marry her.

title-card

MGR has a dearest friend, he has a sister Rajasulochana she is in love with the Villain. M.N.Nambiyar plans to kill MGR in his house unfortunately MGR’s friend was stabbed and he asks MGR to look after her sister and dies. MGR comes to know about Rajasulochana’s love and asks Nambiyar to marry but he suggest MGR to first marry his sister who is mentally ill. MGR sacrifices his love of Ponni and marries Nambiyar’s sister (Raghini). MGR comes to know about his wife’s illness and sends doctor to look after. Meanwhile on his investigation MGR comes face to face with the thief and killer Nambiyar in old man get up. He escapes cunningly but both his sister and Rajasulochana came to know Nambiyar is the person who is the criminal. Raghini tries to convey this message to MGR but was locked in her room by her sister in law. MGR fells sick and he is treated by a servant who knows everything about him, Ponni comes to know about the sacrifice done by MGR during the treatment.

Nambiyar plans to change his location and tries to transfer the amazed wealth. Ponni on returning from MGR’s house hears the meeting between her uncle and Nambiyar. Ponni then through the help of Jimmy (Nagesh) asks MGR to visit her secretly, MGR comes to the location but was taken custody by M.R.Radha, MGR was locked in Nambiyar’s hideout.

Meanwhile Raghini somehow escapes from her house and get in touch with Ponni she gives the revolver to her so that her husband escapes from the clutches of Nambiyar, on the way she is killed by M.R.Radha. MGR gets the revolver through Savithri and does the fight and finally Nambiyar gets arrested in the end. After returning from his official duty MGR seeks the hand of Savithri with a present.

parisu_1

The movie has memorable six tunes sung by TMS and P.Sushila.

1. Aalai Parthu Azhagai parthu – solo song for Savithri

2. Pattu Vanna chittu – solo song for MGR

3. Enna Enna inikkithu – duet song

4. Koonthal karuppu – the famous duet song

5. Ponnulagam nooki – solo song for Raghini

6. Kalamennum Nathinele – solo and sad song for Savithri

The highlight of the movie is the performance of MGR and Savithri, the songs and the climax fight, gun slinging new to Tamil movie of those days. After MGR getting married Savithri gives a present to MGR and Raghini, a locket (having the photo of MGR and Savithri) which MGR already gave as a present to Savithri, the change in MGR’s reaction on seeing the locket in the hand of Raghini, lasts only for a fraction of a second, MGR beautifully conveys his reaction, we have to watch carefully the reaction comes and goes in a flash.

In  my childhood I watched this movie in a theater I remember the stick fight were MGR gets hurt and the blood oozing out of his head, the investigation he does in the shore, MGR in the locked room picking up the revolver from the table and the revolver fight with Nambiyar along with Nagesh (the hilarious part of Nagesh in this movie). In one word Parisu (Present) is a crime thriller of the 1960s era.
