A Day With MGR

Ananda Vikatan has issued a vintage edition dated 2.8.1964 the title “A day with MGR in Ramavaram Gardens”. Group of Reporters visited MGR’s residence “Ramavaram Garden”.

av_front

They were welcomed by MGR who returned from shooting. He appeared fresh and cool. The reporters questioned about the animals in Ramavaram Gardens. MGR told that the bear and deer given by MGR Fans from Aranthangi. MGR mentions his fans as his friends and not as fans.

pg_1

The area of Ramavaram Gardens is 7 1/2 acres. It is full of vegetation, Mango tree, Banana cultivation and paddy is also cultivated. It has a Swimming pool and Gym.

Ramavaram Garden bungalow was named as “Annai Nilaiyam”. And MGR has constructed a temple to his Mother in the Eastern side of the garden. The reporters asked him since he was in DMK why did he construct a temple because the party was against God worship. MGR cleared their doubt. (Read for yourself)

pg_2

Breakfast with coffee and Ice cream were given to all the reporters in the mean time MGR queried about the driver who came with them and was he taken care of.

After this party MGR asked the reporters to come with him to take a look at his underground. The reporters were astonished that MGR was very bold enough to show them the underground were MGR could hide his riches. When they questioned him MGR with a smile said there is nothing to hide.

They followed MGR. He opened the door leading to the underground it looked alike in cinema. But when they reached the underground they saw images of Political leaders, religious leaders such as Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru, Rabindranath Tagore, Vivekananda, Jesus Christ, Buddha, Ramalinga Swamigal, Saradhamani Ammaiyar, Bharathiyar, Thiruvalluvar. And lots of books written by various authors, on various subjects. MGR explained why he has kept this Library in underground because when someone speaks it will echo so who ever comes to read the books only concentrate in reading.

pg_3

The reporters came up with MGR but the underground Library was in their mind. They asked the difference between Drama and Cinema. MGR without hesitation answered, lot of difference between Drama and cinema I can give you an instance, I have acted in En Thangai both in drama and as well as in cinema. When I was acting in drama I can change my mood instantly and able to weep and act in natural way. But when the same was done in Cinema I adamantly not used glycerin. When they showed me the shot it looked though I am not crying because due to heat of the tears dried before they reach my cheeks. From that day onwards I realized the difference between the Cinema and drama and started to use glycerin like others.

MGR told about that he is going to shoot Kalki’s novel “Ponniyin Selvan” in Tamil and as well as in English and that he has asked “Anna” for English dialogs. He also told that he is wishing to visit foreign countries and he is going to participate in cultural festival in Malaysia shortly.

The reporters felt that MGR was different in person he was very calm and cool.

The Magic Lives on

MGR remains a compelling topic for filmmakers and film lovers, even 21 years after his death. And in a phase of reliving old movies and songs, through remakes and remixes, he and his movies are hot property, as he towers Tamil cinema as a colossus.

Hardly anyone escapes the fantasy of doing an MGR song, or having people sway to their tunes the way he did. That Rajinikanth, who’s arguably the most popular living star in Tamil cinema, used MGR’s name as his in Sivaji The boss, is only ample proof of that. And why, Kamal Haasan, who’s already used an MGR title, Sathi Leelavathi, had lined up one more such title, Marmayogi, for his next.

But this craze for MGR doesn’t confine itself to the immediate generations following his alone. Actors Backiaraj and Sathyaraj, who’ve openly flouted their regard for the Puratchi Thalaivar, are backed by the youngest crop of actors today too, including Backiaraj’s son, Shantanu himself. Says the young actor, “It’s hard to escape the magic of he and his movies. If I were asked to do a remake of his films, I’d definitely pick Nadodi Mannan, Ulagam Sutrum Valiban or Vettaikaaran. I believe just using his title creates an impact with the people,” explains the actor, who is currently involved in the last lap of shooting for a remake of his dad’s movie, Pudhiya Varpugal. It may be noted here that two of the movies mentioned by the actor, Vettaikaaran and Ulagam Sutrum Valiban are being reused in Kollywood now, with another movie also titled Valiban Sutrum Ulagam.

Speak about Vettaikaaran, it is all set to be Vijay’s next movie, following Villu, and will begin in February. Speaking to Expresso, director Babu Sivan, who debuts with Vettaikaaran says, “The title was chosen because it would have a good reach among cinema fans. But that was only half the reason for choosing such a title. The title of Vettaikaaran, meaning hunter, fits the bill to describe the hero’s character in the commercial, action-sentiment movie.”

Actor-director Sundar C thinks no different. “I’m a diehard MGR fan myself. And I have a dream project in mind, and I’ve given it the title of MGR’s Ulagam Sutrum Vaaliban. It has no resemblance to the actual story, but it’s title close to my heart as an MGR fan. And it fits the story too,” explains the director. But if he were to remake an MGR classic, which one would it be?

“Naadodi Mannan, obviously,” he responds. “It’s got all the ingredients to make it a relevant hit even today: from the grandeur, to the complex storyline, twists in the story, exotic island locations and a gripping climax. And yeah, two heroines to dance with,” laughs Sundar C, adding that the film had an enviable second half.

The list of MGR fans in the industry is long, and longer is a check of MGR titles used in films today, from 'Aayirathil Oruvan', 'Nam Naadu', 'Nalai Namadhey', 'Pudhumai Pithan', 'Raman Theydiya Seethai', 'Netru Indru Nalai' and 'Anbe Va', to movies after his songs like 'Pachaikili Muthucharam', 'Azhagiya Ta', 'Ennai Theriyuma', 'Thulluvadho Ilamai', to name a few.

Attempts to recreate MGR on screen through computer graphics have also been made, and the latest in that league is Puratchi Thalaivar, a full length feature film with an animated MGR as the lead. With MGR’s movies like 'Ulagam Sutrum Valiban' or 'Nadodi Mannan' being bigs hits in the second runs they have earlier this year, looks like the Puratchi Thalaivar’s magic isn’t weaning out anytime soon.

Nine Cameras

This is the video clip showing the work of nine cameras and also the editing brilliance.

In the previous post I have given the interview of K.Kannan from an old magazine told to Vijayan. This is the visual of the previous post.

Total duration of this video clip of nine cameras is 2 minute 10 seconds. I checked the clip and counted the cameras it came to 10 and again I checked with one person view and it came to 9. Please check yourself and write in comments were and which the camera are placed.

Embed video

All the nine cameras are placed on the right side to show the Soldiers and Elephants 1000 in number.

The last 15 second of this clip is from 3 cameras side by side on the right side of the characters played by K.Kannan and Latha. A frame is not missed. Watch the clip. This clip is not only for the camera work of those days (MGR movies) but also the editing techniques used in those days.

Any problem in viewing click this url

As said by K.Kannan this camera placement was done by MGR with a map and his editing mind. This kind of camera work is done to other characters and not to important MGR character. That shows MGR's good nature to other actor. Who will allow such a first time feat (great skill) featured by other actors in this Tamil movie world?

And I don’t know which camera angle MGR have handled.

MGR to return in an animation flick

By ApunKaChoice
Tue, Dec 02, 2008 13:53 IST

He ruled Tamil Cinema for almost a generation. Yes, we are talking about the legendary M G Ramachandran, whose magic will be created again with an animation flick named ‘Puratchi Thalaivan’.

Recently, the thespian’s old movies like ‘Nadodi Mannan’, ‘Aayirathi Oruvan’ and ‘Ulagam Suturam Valibhan’ released with a new look. And all the movies were successful at the box office.

It has been more than two decades since the legendary actor passed away. Now, director Venky Babu is all set to revive the charm of the mega star in a 3D animation film. The movie named ‘Puratchi Thalaivan’ (Revolutionary Leader) will feature MGR as the hero of today’s generation.

In fact, ‘Puratchi Thalaivan’ is another name given to MGR. The film promises to present MGR unique mannerisms and style well suited to present time.

This animation flick is produced by Sridevi Rao of Mayabimbham Media. Their first animated project was ‘Inimey Naangathan V4’, which came last year. ‘Inimey Naangathan V4’ was made in a budget of Rs 4 crore, whereas the makers this time are thinking to make it in a big and lavish way.

The film’s trailer is planned to be showcased on January 17th that is on MGR’s birthday. But the film’s heroine is not finalized yet. Now it remains to be seen whether it will be Shriya Saran , Trisha or Nayantara or yesteryear actresses like Jayalalitha, Saroja Devi, or Latha?

This is from http://tkada.com/mgr-puratchi-thalaivan-animation-movie-photo-gallery/

M.G.Ramachandran one of the prominent and legendary Super Star of South Indian is still having huge number of fans. Even after his demise he had lot of admirers and followers; the happy news for them is that their Thalaivar is going to appear in big screen through Puratchi Thalaivan an animation movie. After seeing the recent success of the old reissue movies of MGR like Aayirathil Oruvan, Ulagam Sutrum Valibhan, Nadodi Mannan Director Venky Prasad and Producer Sridevi Rao is going to do a movie under the banner of Mayabimbam Media Private Limited and the animated movie is titled as Puratchi Thalaivan.

Madurai Meeta Sundara Pandian - A Look Back II

MGR directed movie Madurai Meeta Sundarapandian has showcase of technical brilliance. MGR used 9 cameras to shoot one scene to reduce the time and money.

K.Kannan who acted as Kosala King in that movie narrates MGRs techniques in filming the long scene into one shot.

At 2 pm MGR handed over 7 page dialogue to Kannan and asked him to by heart the dialogs and the shot will be ready by 4 pm. Since it is last day of shooting in Jaipur if the scene does not end by 5 pm (as the Sunlight gets weak) they have to stay another 1 day.

Kannan was eager how MGR will shoot this lengthy scene. Within two hours MGR fixed 9 cameras and no camera is visible to other camera angle. His placement of 9 cameras was checked again.

By 4.15 pm MGR said "Action" then Kannan as the King and Latha as Kayalvizhi spoke the 7 page dialog without any mistake and the shot was ok.

And further Kannan says that to shoot that scene it will normally take one day to complete but MGR's brilliant mind completed the scene within 15 minutes. MGR's Cinema technology mind is far ahead of others of his day.

The video part will be uploaded in next post.

MGR returns to Silver Screen

Today early morning when I opened my In box two mails - MGR Fans Siva Shanmugam and Dubai K.P.Ramesh has forwarded these url's to me. A Happy News to MGR Devotees and MGR Fans, MGR to star in a brand new film.

This is from India Glitz website:

One of the most popular movie stars Tamilnadu has ever seen MGR is making a comeback to films. It would be an animation flick from the stables of Mayabimbham Media (P) Ltd who had earlier made the 3D film 'V4'.

The 3D film starring MGR has been titled 'Puratchi Thalaivan'. The producers of the film have said that MGR had last performed in the film 'Maduraiyai Meeta Sundara Pandiyan' and proudly proclaim that they are bringing him back to the silver screen after all these years.

'Puratchi Thalaivan' would be directed by Venky Baboo and produced by Sridevi Rao. A team of 3D animators would indulge themselves in the job of recreating the magic of MGR on screen.

One wonders who the animated heroine of the film would be. Would it be Saroja Devi or Jayalalitha. Who knows….the think tank behind MGR might prefer newer heroines like Trisha, Shriya or Nayantara.

This is from The Hindu:

MGR to be featured in forthcoming animated film

Chennai (IANS): Iconic actor and Tamil Nadu's former chief minister M.G. Ramachandran will compete with "current younger heroes" for screen space in a forthcoming animated 3D film "Puratchi Thalaivan"(revolutionary leader), its producer said Friday.

"It involves a Tamil artiste and leader 'Puratchi Thalaivan' who saves the nation by fighting and exposing traitors. The film will help the late leader, popularly known as MGR, compete with 'younger heroes' such as Rajnikant, Kamal (Haasan), Vijaykanth, Ajith and Sarath (Kumar)," producer Sridevi Rao said.

"The venture will present the grace of the evergreen MGR to the new generation with the latest methods of storytelling since his last official movie 'Maduraiyai Meetta Sundarapandiyan' (The handsome Pandiyan who retrieved Madurai) was released in 1978 - three decades back,"publicist Nikhil Murugan said.

The work on the movie is well underway, he added.

"Puratchi Thalaivan"is being directed by Venky Baboo.

Produced under the corporate banner Mayabimbham, the venture's trailer will be released on January 17 to coincide with MGR's 92nd birth anniversary, a press statement added.

MGR was Tamil Nadu's chief minister from 1977 till his death in 1987. He acted in 132 films (including two unfinished ventures which formed part of releases four years after his death) in a career spanning 43 years.

M.G.R the man of words and deed--K.T.Rajasingham

In 1966, the newspaper company invited the South Indian matinee idol M.G.Ramachandran to Colombo. B.Sarojadevi who acted as heroin with him in many Tamil films, was also in his delegation that visited Colombo. The tour program of M.G.Ramachandran was arranged by our company and I was included on behalf of the newspaper group to accompany them in their visits. When I met M.G.Ramachandran for the first time in Colombo, I found him to be a very friendly person and I had the opportunity to be with him for more than 10 days, during the period he stayed in Colombo. He was taken to Jaffna, Batticaloa, Kandy and Nuwera Eliya. In Kandy, he told me that he was born in a Tea-estate in Kandy and he was very much excited by being in Kandy, his place of birth.....

In the evening after the close of play for the day, he came over to the hotel I was staying and I introduced him to our players and to the manager. He invited us for dinner, but we were unable to accept his kind invitation, as our program was already fixed by the Cricket board of Control. When we went to Madras, we were put up at the Victoria Hotel, Egmore. Here M.G.Ramachandran came and met us and invited all of us for a dinner at his Ramawaram Garden house. We all went and had a fine dinner. It was a memorable one for all of us. “M.G.R.” - he was popularly called and adored by millions all over, was the man of words and deed and I can’t forget about this gem of a person, with whom I happened to be in touch since for a very long time.
